Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Anyone else playing Dressmaker? My daughters got me playing it. It's genuinely brilliant 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 06/10/2026If nothing else, the "Zionism is racism" motion passed at the Green Party conference has done one thing. It's brought quite a lot of the racists out into the open. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I get the purpose of the policy and the ideas behind it. But this isn't a detail world. This is a social media world. And that's what makes this naive. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Do I think that Zionism is racism? If you just take those 3 words, and *my understanding of the words*, I have to say no. I've heard the arguments and the rationale in the policy and... ...having to define Zionism means you've already lost the debate. In a social media world? Very bad. 110
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This isn't about whether it's "right" or not. That's not my argument. My argument is literally that this isn't good policy. Strategically it's naive. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This could and should have been introduced and managed a lot better. But it feels like a group of people decided on the title then wrote the policy to fit. It forces a maximalist policy position that will be very hard to justify to the broad spectrum of voters. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I have rarely taken this kind of absolute position on anything. Where I have, I generally find that my position softens and becomes more nuanced over time. Conference passing this policy makes me wonder about who has joined the party and whether they are really bothered about the environment. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026This needed a lot more care and much wider consultation. Just having a few Jewish Greens involved doesn't mean it is well written. Because Jewish people, just like every other group, are not homogenous. More care should have been taken. It wasn't. 120
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026All anyone will read is the 3 words of the name of the policy. They will not read the internal policy definition of "Zionism". And as "Zionism" is a contested term (there is no accepted definition *across* the debate) this becomes an easy way to make the party look antisemitic. 120
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 04/10/2026"Zionism is racism" was passed by the Green Party conference today. It's the top news story on the BBC News website. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... This really worries me. Not because I don't care about Palestinians. And I think they've tried to be as clear as possible wrt antisemitism. But 110

Reposted by Paul JohnstonJoel S. @joelhs.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The "all anti-Zionism is always and forever antisemitism" people and the "all antisemitism becomes fine if we just say it's anti-Zionism, even if we're ranting about the Talmud" people reinforce one another, even if both sides utterly fail to see it. 12711168
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Man City should be relegated outside the top 4 leagues in England at the end of the season. They should be docked the number of points they made during the time they were breaking the rules (that's hundreds of points at least). 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I'm still amazed at how many people think AWS Lambda is basically kubernetes. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Try explaining serverless to people now. It's almost like weaponised incontinence... Sorry incompetence. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Have been having frustrating conversations today. It made me realise how poorly understood LLM usage in tech actually is. Most people still seem to be at the stage of "I'm in a repo and I direct the AI to fulfill a feature request/bugfix". 010
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Infrastructure state and stored state are now the only things that really matter. I think we've reached a point where developers are largely realising that code is no longer a differentiator. Product management should now be the only focus. 000
Reposted by Paul JohnstonIan Dunt @iandunt.bsky.social · 23/09/2026One of the hardest things about being progressive is knowing the limit to inequality. For communists, it's easy. There'll be no inequality. For neoliberals, it's also easy. There's no limit to inequality. But most people live somewhere between these positions, never sure where to draw the line. 2948

Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026It's been tried. I'm not sure it's a good idea though. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026What I'm now grappling with is how to adapt this in the context of a team. I can trust myself to use an LLM well most of the time. How do you scale that? How do you ensure overall quality when an AI produces better quality code? 110
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I've come to the conclusion that GitHub PRs and human review are a form of governance theatre in most places I've seen it implemented. I've spent the last few months building a new thing and wanted to review everything but... I'm realising that it's already beyond my (substantial) expertise. 110
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026And it's largely true. It's incredibly hard to police all the things that happen in a business. And so they do what they can get away with. Add to that the incentives are "make more money" and that's about it. That's also why weak government makes it worse because they degrade regulation. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026You can't. Unless every company literally publishes their entire supply chain, there is no way you can pick the ethical from the unethical. That's why ethical suppliers are often very small. That's why people say there is no ethical consumption under capitalism. 110
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I'm less and less convinced by agents and more and more convinced by modular and structural definitions being foundational for an AI session. The agent swarm feels like an attempt to "do the work" without realising what work you're supposed to be doing. It's "fire and forget" with minimal aim. 010
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Governance is internal. It's an organisation managing risk. Regulation is external. Legal requirements are external. Governments set rules you have to follow. Accountability is who takes what consequences (legal or similar) for actions taken and outcomes that occur. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I've been trying to find an outlet for expressing my views for years. But short form posts are really hard. But nobody reads long form posts really any more. And I am not great at being concise. It's partly why I'm thinking of stepping away from social media. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026And yet I'm not very good at chess. Which is weird. I know that was a leap, but this is how my brain works. If I'm so good at seeing connections, why can't I see it when playing chess? Trust me, I've tried. I keep playing stupid obviously bad moves. I don't understand myself. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026My world is full of connections that other people don't make. Or they make it but very slowly. I'm constantly saying "I told you that weeks/months/years ago" to people. That's not being arrogant. It's just what happens. I'm not always right, but I often make connections others don't. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026And politics is never single disconnected issues for me. Being anti everything is a pointless thing to do. But dismissing everyone who doesn't agree is also stupid. Principles matter. But so does looking after the vulnerable and being pragmatic. It's why both the left and right annoy me. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Explaining the route can be difficult. And I have realised that my route is not the normal route very often. My brain saw AWS Lambda and immediately saw the opportunity. I'm still amazed at how few people understand it. Same with AI. It seems I use it very differently to others. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I've realised that my brain has so much more context than 280 characters can handle. When I say stuff, there's usually 47 thoughts unsaid. But what I'm realising is that this isn't the normal way people think. It's an ADHD thing in some ways. My brain gets to the conclusion very fast. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I think there is a lot to be said for the protection of scientific research. These LLMs couldn't exist without the *huge* amount of scientific research published and put into training data. I wouldn't want to see years of work usurped by an LLM without it being published first. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026There are so many positives in Northern Ireland. It's an amazing place with amazing people. It's also amazing how few people are needed to destroy the peace and stability that has been so hard fought. I'm genuinely surprised at how badly Westminster has handled NI for much of the last 3 decades 210
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026In many ways, dissolution if the Union is about the only way this gets resolved. Give full control to Northern Ireland and its people. Without it, it's just going to stay an unresolved mess, in limbo. 000
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026I know. I'm just giving my experience (albeit limited). I've been a few times, had some good friends from Northern Ireland and more. My point is more that people not from Northern Ireland should let the people who can do things do it. Peace in NI is an amazing achievement that needs protecting. 210
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026That's why internal governance exists (or should) and processes to enforce it. This is also why the "just following orders" has limits. There is a crossover between the two and it's fuzzy. In a scenario like this, employees tend to have very little power to say no. 100
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026This is why you should be **very careful** using these models. Your prompts and content you upload (unless you opt out where you can) *WILL* BE USED AS "TRAINING DATA". "TRAINING DATA" Good grief. I genuinely despair of people using these tools without opting out. Auto opt out *now*. 110
Paul Johnston @pdj.bsky.social · 28/09/2026If I've learned anything about solving problems in Northern Ireland in the past few decades, it's that people outside Northern Ireland think it's simple and people inside Northern Ireland think it's impossible. 110
