🧵The current coverage in relation to Alberta's new absurd COVID-19/influenza vaccination book and pay policies are missing a key aspect of public health, the implications of healthy/young people not getting the vaccine either.

🧵Last year @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social and I extracted public data on 35,828 research projects funded by eight SSHRC programs to debunk the Alberta govt's claim that federal funding agencies favor “left-wing” or “progressive” disciplines. We now take one step further to analyze the data.

The University of Alberta made the decision to stop funding all university affiliated child care centres. Dr. @mmaroto.bsky.social and I wrote about the consequences of this decision and how it will not only harm the university, but the Edmonton community.

🧵Pierre Poilievre has promised harsher punishments for intimate partner violence. A new op-ed @dekeseredy.bsky.social , @pinglamjoeip.bsky.social, and I wrote for the Conversation Canada shows that these policies are not effective.
theconversation.com
Pierre Poilievre’s proposals on intimate partner violence will do little to stop it
There is scant evidence to suggest more punitive measures will discourage violence against women. Policy-makers should instead use a balanced approach that prevents violence before it occurs.

Policymakers concerned for survivors of intimate partner violence could take many steps, such as funding a variety of effective prevention programs. But Pierre Poilievre’s approach appears to centre the offender — not the victim. Experts write. #CdnElxn2025

Still not a word from the Alberta Government or any public health or emergency response officials in Edmonton about the huge spike in EMS calls for drug poisoning. The week of Feb 24 we hit a record high -- 232 or 33 per day. #yeg #ableg

I have seen so many discussions on erosion of Canadian culture, most is thinly veiled racism For me, this is a real example of Canadian values receding. Paying to see a doctor used to be unthinkable, now it is becoming increasingly common We need to return to strong, publicly funded care for all

Another surgeon is suing the doctor who is AHS head of otolaryngology in Edmonton, which never sent my husband the contract for the ear, nose and throat surgeon position he successfully applied for when a committee recommended him be hired over two years ago. The job remains empty to this day.

The city estimates ripping up bike lanes on Yonge, Bloor Street & University would cost Ontario taxpayers $48 million, on top of the $27 million spent installing the lanes. Factor in new infrastructure for backup routes & it’s well over $100 million! www.thestar.com/news/gta/rem... #topoli #bikeTO

Drop in drug poisoning deaths does not necessarily indicate Alberta Recovery Model is working
Alberta’s controversial approach to the opioid crisis rejects harm reduction, including supervised consumption sites. Despite recent UCP claims that the program is working, more evidence is needed.
