There were other times when settled Americans were not happy about the swarthiness of immigrants. But we had leadership that passed and enforced laws that let the immigrants in. And we are all enriched by it. We need immigration reform so the bigotry is just noise.

The right’s hysteria over immigration really boils down to how they look at this chart. The % of America’s foreign born in 2025 is comparable to the % throughout much of the 19th and early 20th Century. What the right really doesn’t like is where immigrants are coming from: Latin America.

Travel question. When traveling to nations that Trump has alienated (almost all of them) how do you visibly separate yourself from Trumpism? Like, what's the opposite of a red hat? And it can't be a shirt that says, "Fuck Trump." Something more subtle.

Agreed. Maybe it's suppressed due to the items in the "basket" that determines inflation. Maybe it's worse in urban/blue areas. But my budget has been hit much harder than the 3-4% they are reporting.

I can't stop thinking about this meme. Approaching the end of my professional life, I see what I have achieved and what I have not achieved, by comparing myself to others. But I never rationalize it by attacking others. It's on me. This is one of those fundamental differences.
