#USWNT’s Emma Hayes on Spain’s first goal: “We play ourselves into that position,” talks about getting the details right and adds “you can’t afford to go 2-0 down against the best team in the world, especially the way we conceded”

#USWNT 0, Spain 2 I had wondered if Spain would need sustained periods of possession to accomplish their goals and so far, the answer’s no, Eva Navarro scoring in the 14th US gather as a group for some discussions post-goal and eventually get some encouragement from the crowd before play resumes

#USWNT pairing at center back today is Tierna Davidson and Kennedy Wesley - I believe it's the first time they're playing together but Emma Hayes said yesterday they're good complements to on eanother www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...
USWNT head coach Emma Hayes on Tierna Davidson and Kennedy Wesley:

"They're top players and I can put them in situations this week to create the exposures. I think developing as a pairing is something that they're going to have to do, but I believe in them, and I watch their attention to detail. I think you got [Tierna], who, by nature, is a defender that can progress the ball up the pitch. Great covering defender, really good aerially. You got Kennedy, who steps to the play really well. I think they're actually a good complement to each other. I think they're very intelligent people, so they can solve really good tactical puzzles, and I've seen them do it all week, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they progress together."

Mauricio Pochettino insisted on championing the collective rather than praising individuals, which was *very* apparent when he spoke about Cavan Sullivan to me, feels like a tacit understanding of his potential — he used questions about Sullivan to talk about team spirit #USMNT
USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino on Cavan Sullivan:

"He's a talented player with enormous quality but with a very good balance in possession and out of possession. He's a fighter. He's a warrior. It's difficult to find these types of players with tremendous quality with the ball in possession. I think Cavan enjoys, in possession with the ball [at] the feet like when he needs to [be] chasing people and recover the ball, no? That is my impression after nearly three weeks together and that is unbelievable, to have a player like this. I think it's fantastic news for USA … Happy for him, happy for the team. I like what he said after the game: the most important [thing] was the result. Learning every day, that is the good thing."

everyone is understandably trying to strike the right tone when it comes to the #USMNT’s next generation, Mauricio Pochettino more so than anyone else, but he did say this yesterday “The language of football is good players connecting. They don't need too much time together”

the #USMNT lineup is almost an even split between World Cup players and the rest, which reminds me of something Tyler Adams said the other day this generation has "less pressure" and will be able to "lean on guidance" unlike the post-2018 newcomers like him www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/...
USMNT midfielder Tyler Adams on the differences between his generation's entrance to the national team and the current newcomers:

"I think there's less pressure on these young kids to come in and perform immediately and more time to actually develop them, whereas, when I came in, it was off the cusp of obviously not qualifying for a World Cup and it was like, 'You guys basically need to play right now and need to perform right now so we can qualify for the next World Cup. I look at this generation of players right now, and I think that they're in a great position, that they can go through the process properly and really just lean on guidance and go through and get their own experiences, have opportunities like the Olympics, as well, along that way and other competitions to really grow them for the next World Cup."

not much thr Cutrent can do about player availability, obviously, but the big difference between this season and last, for me: Vlatko Andonovski put in the effort to improve their defense en route to the Shield, while that defensive resolve is missing this season under Chris Armas

Jessica Berman's answer really focused on the international match calendar, a reminder that #NWSL's greatest anxieties are still around building their own schedule she talks about navigating the international breaks here but she also addressed MLS' calendar flip and stadium availability
NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman: "I think as a general matter, the things that we care about as a league is a balanced perspective as it relates to the relationship between club and country. That's something we've talked about in the past, so that would be sort of first. I think second, an understanding of what priorities and investment is being made in the women's game in particular. The next 12 to 18 months is a critical period of time for us, as we understand and have been told that the women's international match calendar for the next cycle is going to be determined, and what the consultation process is around that is important to us and what role we can play in advocating for the appropriate symbiotic relationship between club and country. We very much understand the need to work with the ecosystem and want to make sure that, as the place where we are responsible for the daily training environment of these players, that there's appropriate allocation of weekends to be able to grow the business."

FIFA issues a new, oddly-timed and, quite honestly, strange statement on FFE they reiterate the proposal but are clearly more defensive about it, as evidenced by the bullet points “respect[ing] feedback” and how “the media disrupted planned consultation process” inside.fifa.com/organisation...

NEW: Concacaf joins UEFA in rejecting FFE, instead imploring FIFA to find ways to increase funding for FIFA Forward through its current means and asking that "any matter follows the proper governance processes" in future full statement: www.concacaf.com/competitions...
Concacaf statement: For these reasons, Concacaf and its 41 Member Associations have:

Rejected the proposal;
Tasked their FIFA Council Members with engaging FIFA to determine how existing vast FIFA reserves could be used to increase FIFA Forward funding for football development across our region; and
Tasked their FIFA Council Members with instructing the FIFA President to ensure that any matter follows the proper governance processes via staff and FIFA Council, in accordance with the FIFA Statutes.
Through these actions, Concacaf reaffirms that football's future—and its greatest asset—must remain in the hands of our football family.
