In ancient Greece, it was said mushrooms sprang up where Zeus, god of the sky and thunder, cast his lightning. There may be some truth in the tale; modern studies show strikes can boost mushroom growth, even doubling yields on spore-laden logs hit by lightning. #FolkloreThursday
Nine-photo collage of woodland mushrooms and toadstools, including vivid red-and-white fly agarics, pale capped fungi and small clustered mushrooms growing among moss, grass and autumn leaves, with several growing on fallen logs.

Pretty little dandelion Growing in the grass, Lifts up its yellow head To look at those who pass. But ere the Summer's ended His yellow head turns gray; His petals bright, to angels turn, And then all fly away. ‘The Dandelion’ by Grace E. Loring. #poetry #wildflowers
A collage showing the changing stages of the dandelion. At top left is a close-up of a bright yellow dandelion flower against a soft green background; beside it, a cluster of dandelions growing among grass. 25 March is Hilaria, the Roman festival of joy, honouring Cybele, Mother of the Gods, and celebrating the triumph of light after the spring equinox. As sap rose and buds unfurled, Romans rejoiced in spring’s return—winter’s death giving way to new life. A sacred day of renewal.
Collage of nine early spring flowers against soft green backgrounds: snake’s head fritillary with purple chequered bells; white spring snowflakes; yellow daffodil; yellow cowslips; pink daphne cluster; white flowering allium; pink flowering currant; blue grape hyacinths; and more cowslips in warm yellow and orange tones.

Some say the poisonous-fruited Euonymus is named after Euonyme who, in Orphic tradition, is the mother of the Erinyes, or “Furies”, the three sister-goddesses who represent vengeance. It is commonly called the spindle-tree because its wood was used to craft spindles, or distaffs.
