Had a lot of success with book clubs and having the junior lead the discussion and the seniors being encouraged to “yes and” unless something was completely off. Also good experience with encouraging people to present on a topic - teaching makes you learn better

Cricket, for example, in my mind is always best enjoyed with someone you can natter to over a beer, whilst sport happens to occur in your vicinity occasionally.

Paul Battisson @pbattisson.bsky.social · 31/05/2025

It definitely is possible to enjoy solo, I meant more for a new sport, I think a friend being there or introducing is part of the fun. I get the point of the column is solo, I was more thinking I think if you retried with a friend who knows/cares about the sport you would maybe like it more

A great piece but I wonder with these are you missing a key part which is watching with someone? My enjoyment of any live sport is increased by going with a friend to catch up and also discuss why our team was shit/unfairly penalised/should have won/unlucky etc.

This was a delightful natter with @pbattisson.bsky.social. Not that it’s surprising, Paul is someone I always find things to discuss with. Have a listen: I go on way too long about the early Trailhead days. I was a bit part player, but I got to witness a lot of that part of Salesforce history.

A lot of the comparisons on energy and environment are comparing oranges to apples. A Bitcoin transaction is not like a visa transaction, but even a direct comparison forgets the fact a piece of plastic is created, coloured, shipped, etc.

010

Paul Battisson @pbattisson.bsky.social · 18/11/2024

Wrecking the environment might be a bit unfair in my opinion. Bitcoin isn’t as bad environmentally as gold mining ccaf.io/cbnsi/cbeci/... and is a much broader piece of tech. I am not saying it’s environmentally sound but I think you have to look at the broader perspective.

NEW: "Moving Off X: An Open Letter from UK Journalists" UK political journalists: "Twitter was, for a long time, the place to be for UK politics. We believe that time is now over... "We have taken the decision to move over to other platforms, in particular Bluesky" docs.google.com/document/d/1...

We have used Twitter – now X – for many years. It has been a resource for story-gathering, network-building, and a megaphone for getting public-interest stories to a wider audience. And it has been a well of ideas and discourse.
Unfortunately that well is now poisoned.
All of us have seen X become more toxic and broken since Elon Musk took over in 2022.
Feeds have become less useful. Engagement has plummeted, except for those who will pay. Replies gain traction not through merit, but through the corrupted blue-tick system.
We have seen hate speech and abuse deliberately dialled up and amplified, boosted not just by the algorithm, but by the owner himself.
And England’s racist summer riots were one of many factors suggesting to us that X is not a neutral platform, but a space that now seems to glorify misinformation at a great cost to our public sphere.
Millions of people are ditching X, and we are doing so, too. We have taken the view that it is no longer a useful tool for objective reporting, but a weapon being wielded by a narrowing ideological set.
A tipping point is coming. Perhaps we are already in it.
After much consideration, we have taken the decision to move over to other platforms, in particular Bluesky. For some of us that means instantly deleting our X accounts, for others it is a more gradual process.
But we are all putting the majority of our efforts into building more constructive online spaces elsewhere for political dialogue and reporting.
Bluesky is becoming a new hub for political discussion, and we encourage other UK journalists to join and become active. We are already seeing far higher engagement on our posts there than we’ve seen recently on X.
And importantly, the mechanisms to limit abuse actually work.
We enjoyed Twitter while it lasted. It played an important role in shaping many of our careers. And it was, for a long time, the place to be for UK politics. We believe that time is now over.
Twitter is dead. Long live Twitter

Is it also partly a demographic and preference shift? Younger people like playing a game like Fortnite or Minecraft that is never-ending. I love a deep story and 100 hr game, I just now don’t have as much time to throw into it. Yours, a man nearing middle age.
