NCR staff reporter Camillo Barone reports on Cardinal Joseph Tobin of Newark, NJ and his message that "war is always evil": "War is the result of sin. It is the destruction of the harmony and moral order that God intended to exist among individuals, nations, and peoples. War is always evil even when it is undertaken out of necessity for the defense of humanity. The Church opposes all war, and it stands in favor of peace—always and everywhere. Yes, there are times when war is unavoidable—precisely in order to protect human lives or to restore peace.

Reposting: On February 17th 2026, the members of Pax Christi PA sent a letter to each Latin rite bishop in Pennsylvania, as well as to the Ukrainian and Byzantine archeparchies, to introduce ourselves and offer our service as a state level coalition of Pax Christi in Pennsylvania. We shared our concerns about different manifestations of militarism in just the previous few weeks. This letter was sent only days before the beginning of military strikes on Iran. Many members of Pax Christi PA contributed to the drafting of this letter. Our letter is linked here on the website and available for download. Peace of Christ. Get Involved Contact Us

Today we remember the life, work, and martyrdom of Blessed Rutilio Grande, SJ of El Salvador. By his beatification, we are reminded that a life of faith includes working for justice. Blessed Rutilio's work of community faith-based organizing becomes for all of us a model of holiness and action. Read his famous "Apopa Sermon" where he imagines Christ's ministry in the context of El Salvador's violence and repression in the 1970s, and what it means to be Church in that context.

"Every work of mercy suffers from the same pitiless reversal as soon as war is declared. Human beings are made to suffer the agonies of thirst, hunger, nakedness, homelessness, untreated disease, and captivity, when they are not killed outright. The same evils are inflicted on civilian noncombatants as on combatants." - Eileen Egan, co-founder of Pax Christi USA, in Peace Be With You (Orbis Books, 1999), 149. Get Involved Contact Us

By Johnny Zokovitch A gift of having spent 35 years of my life ensconced in the Catholic peace and justice community has been working alongside the (often too few) bishops who manage to weave together the pastoral and prophetic vocations of the place they hold within the larger church. I had the privilege of being supported and mentored by men like…

"During the experience of years spent in the debris of modern war, I became aware of a dread reality the fact that modern war does not merely interrupt, but reverses every work of mercy. Each side in war shares in this reversal, and one side cannot refuse to practice the reversal without losing the war. The question of just and unjust is irrelevant, since wars are fought for victory." - Eileen Egan, co-founder of Pax Christi USA, in Peace Be With You (Orbis Books, 1999), 138.
