the day after i took my neurology boards, Pax collapsed and suddenly passed away. he was by my side this entire journey. the last four years during residency, I hadn’t been able to see him as much as I should have. at the end, just when had the time and was planning to move him up here, he’s gone

It’s hard to see, but a large rainbow appeared around the sun yesterday evening on our walk. I like to think it was Pax crossing over to the other side, where he will have lots of adventures- and before he knows it he will turn around and see us, ready to rejoin him.

Pax is currently being rushed back to Baltimore by car with palliative medicines on board. The remainder of the mass could rupture at any time, and it seems like his journey with us is going to be ending sooner rather than later.

Long story short, work up revealed a large mass on his spleen that had ruptured and began bleeding. The bleeding in his abdomen had stabilized some, but even the best case scenario this appears to be a terminal situation and a ticking time bomb. It is likely a hemangioblastoma.

He was out on a walk this morning when suddenly he yelped and began shivering. He laid down inside and something was obviously very wrong. We called and called and Rochester did not have any emergency vets that could take him- we found a local intermediate vet that was able to get him in.

He was slowing down but overall appeared to be in good health. I was worried about him because something seemed “off” (he smelled different to me and also seemed to be moving strangely at times, to be blunt) but nothing was clearly emergently wrong until today.

Pax has had a soft tissue tumor on his flank (biopsied with unclear pathology but nothing that looked malignant) that was being worked up and observed back in Baltimore, but was felt to be stable. He came up to visit us and spend quality time in Rochester as I have graduated my Neurology residency.

most of current culture is about not doing anything ever because you could hypothetically be imperfect. don’t be a teacher or a doctor because you aren’t superhuman and can’t dedicate your life to your job, don’t be a parent because you aren’t a child life specialist trauma informed researcher etc
