A tyrant oppresses the bodies of his subjects, but what is more damnable, he threatens their spiritual growth, for he is set on his own power, not their progress. He is suspicious of any dignity they may possess that will prejudice his own iniquitous domination. —Thomas Aquinas

I've gotten a big hint that some friends are planning to give me a mechanical watch for an ordination gift. Appropriate.

Listening to Miles Davis and Coltrain on vinyl and reading Anselm of Canterbury. The classics.

While the recent changes to The Episcopal Church website have been a little frustrating, at least someone doing the redesign has a sense of humor. ⚓

So great! Lord bless her! I was thinking about her as I drove past St John's this week. I'm sure she'll be a blessing there just as she was at All Saints. A good example of how youth aren't the future of the church. They are the church.

Same! I really wish some metro Episcopal church would have midweek masses for important days like this, but maybe only a handful of us would go.

I'm curious what your Transfiguration observance will entail.

I'd vote for Jeremy Taylor. A bit after Hooker, but way more enjoyable to read.

Awww! I am doing well! I'm enjoying the beauty at Nashotah House and studying systematic theology.

I finished my field Ed in May. I spent time getting to know the members of the committee, their own perceptions of their church: its strengths and areas for growth. I prayed with and for them. It helped me know them and their community, and helped them know me as more than just a sermon-deliverer.

Preparing to preach on Romans 4 and getting Galatians 3 in the daily office has been great, too.

When I used to work for the Library we had a saying: a misshelved book might as well not be in our collection, meaning that having great information is useless if you can't find it. I feel like AI search is misshelving all the good info on the Internet.

So I think I'm going to have to go back to owning Haynes repair manuals for all my vehicles. (I fix pretty much everything myself.) It's too bad because a good YouTube vid is so much better than a repair book.

And it used to be easy to search YouTube for this kind of thing, but it kept giving me info on totally different cars than I needed.

The AI results were confident that the part was easily accessible on the outside of the trans. Which was wrong. However, even when I searched without AI, enough of the actual websites just restated the wrong AI info.

I hadn't realized how bad Google and YouTube search results had gotten until I needed some basic info for a car repair today. It took me an hour to find out if a certain part was inside or outside of the transmission.

It equally gets me when the cross traffic doesn't have a stop sign and I'm about to time my window for crossing when someone slows to a stop "helpfully" and totally messes up my timing.

Yes! As a cyclist, I just want to be treated as a vehicle: with all the rights and respect as a car would get, without the unhelpful deference of randomly treating me like a pedestrian.

I worked in the university darkroom developing and printing photos for institutional use. It was a pretty cool first job. I made $5.15/hr, which was WI minimum wage in 1995.

MN folks: Remember, today is Tornado Siren Desensitization Day. Sirens will sound at 2 seemingly random times of the day while the weather is completely beautiful and unthreatening. This will train you to be confused and ignore tornado sirens in the future. Have a great day!

My youngest had done it before and wasn't super happy with the results, but his boba standards are pretty high. (He even named his cat Boba, which is a clue to how much he's into the stuff.)

Though I'm personally on team RSV, I think the 2020 NASB has some merit. It's even somewhat gender inclusive (of humans) while retaining the study-value of the 1995.

Of course young people should pursue interests and opportunities! But if literally if every other opportunity comes before their child's spiritual formation, then it should be no surprise when those are the priorities that shape the rest of their lives.
