Packers fans had elite QB’s for 35 years, so the majority of their fan base automatically assumes their QB is a blameless angel failed by coaching, when all they really have is an okay quarterback with moments of goodness

Just saw the highlights from the England match and I didn’t know the prevent defense was a thing in soccer, but damned if they didn’t use it to predictable results

If you like black and white pictures of dead trees, here’s another one
Well first off it’s black and white so you know that it’s all moody and artsy. But check this out, we’ve got ourselves a chain link fence in the foreground so we’ve got some local character for the composition.

Just beyond that fence is this gnarly old dead tree. What kind of tree is it? Couldn’t tell you, but that thing’s deader than a door nail, which is perfect for providing a moody subject for a photo such as this.

It emerges from some overgrown chaparral scrub, while the Cucamonga and Etiwanda peaks of the San Gabriel’s are parked back there in the background like they always are. Are those their official names? I really don’t know or care, but that’s what I call them so deal with it.

Two laps into the O’Reilly Series Road Course at the Coronado naval base and a utility cover got flipped into the air and took out a car’s radiator.
A couple NASCAR officials stare at a utility cover port in the road. One carries a sledgehammer that hovers menacingly over the wayward cover, perhaps to intimidate, perhaps because it just feels nice to believe that applying percussive maintenance will solve the issue. Spoiler alert: it will not fix the issue. Fire must ultimately be brought to bear to make things right, much as it’s been since the dawn of man.

Everything about this match made me wonder, what if American soccer fans dropped the chants and other borrowed nonsense and just acted like Americans. We’ve already perfected sports experiences elsewhere. Just take what works and adopt it to soccer. Step 1: sing our own songs really damned loud

I watch soccer as often as I watch curling, and in my professional opinion, this is a messy Canada-Qatar match

Thompson Creek Trail, Claremont, California
The Thompson Creek Trail is a narrow asphalt path running parallel to a flood control channel as the hazy peaks of the San Gabriels loom in the far distance. This part of the trail gently curves to the right with a wooden fence and copious scrub on the right hand side of the path

Sealed Mr. Do! for Super Nintendo at the SoCal Gaming Expo. $1,000 to break it out of its plastic coffin and slap it into a dodgy SNES
It’s Mr. Do! A seminal arcade game released for Super Nintendo. This one is encased within a plastic coffin to “preserve” its “value”. Someone graded it as a 9.6, which means something I guess. Video game sophisticates consider this one of the greatest video games of all time, which you’ll never appreciate if you purchase this and throw it on a shelf like a barbarian

I can’t account for International Datelines or any of that, but I reckon that 30 years ago, give or take a few hours, I was celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Gas Panic in Roppongi. Best NYE I ever experienced

RIP Drew Struzan - a man whose talent and imagination etched onto so many minds throughout the last 40+ years. His art & posters are some of the first visuals I think of when I think about cinema - an invitation to watch these stories and worlds. A massive loss 💔

Make a Tron movie with, you know, Tron in it and I might go watch it. The best thing about these new movies is we got two solid albums out of them.

I don’t think the people who stumbled all over themselves to follow an antichrist when he appeared are the best predictors of when the Rapture happens, but I guess the blasphemy of presuming to know the mind of god goes along with all of that

I'm genuinely in shock, I can't even say. For 30+ years, I'd get a song snippet in my head that I didn't even remember hearing. I didn't know the words, just a few bars of the melody so I couldn't search for it. I found it by accident this morning looking for something else

I found some old signed papers from when I was 18 while going through some stuff in the garage today, and I laughed when I saw my signature. I used to spell out my entire name. Over the years it got shorter and simpler and now I literally just sign the letter P because who cares at this point

Didn’t see anyone mention “The Great Waldo Pepper” as a good movie to watch in the aftermath of Redford’s death. It was the closest to a cult classic among a lot of the crowds I ran with back in the day. Check it out, it’s a great movie set during the early years of American aviation

I’m gonna have to expand my “Time to Favre” metric to non-Packer games I guess. He just got name checked in this Bills game (TTV is how long it takes for a commentator to mention Brett Favre in a Packers game. It’s rare for them not to)

It perfectly bookends the period with the Matrix. Something dry recitations of history can’t express are the amalgamations of fantasies and ideas that existed in the imaginations of different subcultures, and these films capture them in a way that many recognize as "true" even if they’re not factual

Hackers was released in the USA 30 years ago today. Dullards will tell you the movie is dumb and unrealistic, but it's got style and it's more a fantasy of how hackers imagined themselves, mixed with a heaping helping of good old-fashioned 90s techno-utopianism and a great soundtrack

Finished the last two episodes of Strange New Worlds and I think they finished fairly strong. Great Ortegas episode. Good Kirk/Spock stuff for the slash writers. Felt like the last episode could’ve been a two-parter. The Pike/Batell sequence merited a full episode

Not that I'm a piece of shit who'd be targeted, but if I catch a stray memed-up bullet, I hope it's at least something funny that I know about. Bad enough to be killed, but to be so out of touch I wouldn't even understand the meme that took me out would be adding insult to injury

Not that any of this matters anymore, but in the old republic the Department of War was just the Army. The Navy was separate. The DoD was created by merging them together, creating the joint chiefs as well as the Air Force. The new name isn’t a return to pre-1948, it’s just a rebrand

I can't emphasize how shocked I am by the radio propagation today. I'm transmitting 17-19 watts *at most* on a magnetic loop antenna inside my house, surrounded by hellacious RFI, and I've made contact with two operators in Japan today on 10M. Just an amazing couple of days of surprises

I don’t know what’s happened but suddenly the east coast is on fire for me the last couple of days on 10M (I can never make reliable contact with them at night on 20/40M, it’s mostly the Pacific Northwest). Oddly, everywhere west of the Mississippi is quiet. I even made contact with Cuba today

So the latest episode of Strange New Worlds is fun, but two things: - Vulcans aren't genetically logical; it's a discipline - The show seems to have transformed into just doing bits and gags, while sacrificing the strong character work and heart that provided depth amidst the silliness

This week’s SNW had some potential but I think it suffered from providing a pat “rah-rah” answer to the primary question on which the episode turned instead of leaving it for the viewer to answer. I’m also biased against the “documentary” gimmick in general, so I wasn’t really digging it overall
