I think I’ve been pretty thoroughly routed on this and I can’t say where I got the idea, but I’ve held it confidently a long time. The irony is that I refer to myself as a retired lawyer or attorney. (To be fair, I maintain an inactive license).

Well, you are mistaken there. She was immensely impressive in her debut and taking the role is aspiring to be Goebbels.

I agree that advertising as a “lawyer” would be holding herself out as entitled to practice law. I’m not sure listing herself as a lawyer as she takes the job of press secretary is subject to that statute. Her FOX appearance seems more troublesome.

Did she “hold herself out as practicing or entitled to practice law”? Maybe in FOX when she weighed in on legal questions.

That just begs the question of whether using the title lawyer is equivalent to “advertising or holding” yourself “out as practicing or entitled to practice law.” That is the matter in dispute. Perhaps there is case law on that point, but I haven’t seen it.

That’s oddly worded and I’d appreciate the actual statute. It seems to make a distinction between active and inactive lawyers. The key seems to be that you need to hold yourself out to actually be licensed to practice. law.justia.com/codes/oregon...

I would add, however, that is for purposes of that code and does not criminally its use by people who are not licensed. Maybe a subsection does, but I’m not going through the entire business code.

That was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I am happy to concede the point. As to the state of California (and likely others), use of the term “lawyer” means licensed to practice law.

Your case citation is inapt and readily distinguishable. This was a disbarred lawyer who held himself out as licensed to practice. law.justia.com/cases/califo...

Further searching on the topic makes it less cut and dried than I thought, but I’d think most anyone using the term would have little to fear if they did not actually “practice law.”

Nope, it was “lawyer admitted to practice…” and “attorney admitted to practice in California…”

Paul Finkelstein @paulhfink.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
So not definitive, but your point is taken. I was expecting to see something under the illegal practice of law that holding oneself out as a lawyer/attorney was illegal.

Paul Finkelstein @paulhfink.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Thank you. That is what I was looking for. I’ll note it specifically says “a lawyer admitted for practice”, which implies that there are lawyers who are not admitted for practice. And when speaking of an attorney, it specifies that the license must be from California.

I received a link to the Bar Act and an assertion the terms were treated interchangeably. Was it wrong to assume that the cited document would say what the person citing it claimed?

You would deduce falsely and I know plenty of law school grads who refer to themselves as lawyers, but not attorneys. That having been said, others have argued that state bars define them identically and I will concede to the extent that is demonstrated.

Anyone who went to law school will confirm this. If you graduated from law school, you are a lawyer. You are not an attorney, however, until you get a license. Knowledge of the law is useful whether or not you are admitted to practice.

As well you should be. The 2026 DOD budget was increased by over $110B. They claim the Iran war has cost $37.5B. They, also, claim they will run out of funds that should last until the end of year at the end of the month. Where did it all go?

Why can’t they answer questions. It is possible to not know the cause of something and know that something else is not the cause. I can’t detail how a computer works, but I know it’s not mice on a treadmill.

I work in a medical ICU. I’ve seen it all. A certain group of very wealthy people can hire the staff to make anyone look chipper. He looks posed and fluffed, but I believe it’s him. Polio survivors, like my grandfather, can be very resilient.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s very likely he would qualify for hospice, but I buy this photo. He could go into cardiac arrest tomorrow, but I do tho l it’s more likely we see him on the Senate floor before we see him lying in state (maybe 60-40 or a little better). I am fairly certain he is alive.

Except if he’s dead. Dead is not a condition protected by HIPAA. If Mitch were dead, there would be an announcement as there was for Graham.

I think early reports were speculative and exaggerated and that he is alive communicating. This is a bad format to describe a common patient profile I see in ICU that this seems to fit. Suffice to say, initial reports are often inaccurate and CPR sometimes gets done unnecessarily.

No, that description does not. Rick Wilson founded the Lincoln Project. He’s a strategist and ex-Republican who works in spin and has not cited any source. Not sure his last update. I think people are underrating the downside of a deception of this level being exposed. I’m not saying he’s well

Apparently, the Sunday addition, at least sometimes, has a sports page. This photo is from an individual who has the paper delivered:

Please provide me a link to the original photo, indexed to the date. I’d absolutely love evidence this photo is false. FWIW, the person in the newspaper phot was just drafted by the Nationals Saturday. It could be AI, but I’d want evidence, not speculation.

Yo u are entirely Missing the point. We have no evidence he is dead. If he were dead, many people would have an affirmative obligation to report. We have lots of reasons to believe he is alive. I was responding to a different post.

Name one first responder who has spoken publicly, contrary to ethical obligations, at all. He was alive during the 911 call and the ambulance pickup and not intubated. I work ICU and the story is consistent. If he were dead, a death certificate must be filed. I’m not doing a whole thread.

I will concede that may be possible, but I’d need confirmation. Moreover, I can’t see enough in the photo to tell if it’s labeled the sports page or a mix, but I’ll double check.

Fortunately, we don’t have to just trust Mitch. At this point, hundreds, if not thousands, of people would have to be lying for Mitch to be dead or incapacitated, including professionals with no prior relationship to Mitch who would be breaching ethical and legal obligations.

Why would we trust Grok to analyze this photo? The irony of AI commenting on potential AI is causing me some dissonance.
