I spent a lot of the weekend playing in the depths of a Ubuntu server I have not touched in years. At some point I must have updated the distro and added Gnome... I have no recollection of that. It's now back in service as a media server and also handling some backup work.

It's Book quote wednesday, #BookQW Today's word is appear. We interrupt your regularly scheduled promo of Her Borrowed Grave to tell you that Last Days Forever is on sale for 99¢/99p mybook.to/SFFPROMO_Sep... Time Travel happens through the Cronoslip. Here Jack Foyle is entering the time stream.

Text reads: Gathering the Cronoslip around me, I turned to face the alleyway. The power of the rainbow river battered at my legs. Secondary images of my legs appeared: how they were a second ago, where they would be a second from now.
Holger charged towards me, his feathers fluttering as he ran. “Hey! That’s not possible without your wings!”
I stared at him as we balanced on the edge of the Cronoslip. “What are you yattering on about?”

A flyer for a book called The Last Garagiste. Features a picture of the cover which contains a racing car and a female racing driver.

The Text reads:

Make the grid in Brazil—or it's over.

Six weeks. One broken team.

Leila Moreau dreams of racing at the pinnacle of motorsport, battling the world's fastest drivers in machines that defy physics.

But talent only gets you so far in a sport where money and connections matter more than speed.

As the season draws to a close, no one returns her calls.

When an eccentric Englishman buys the shattered remains of a failed team, Leila gets her chance. Aurora is a vibrant, chaotic independent outfit more suited to the 1970s than the 21st century—a team where budget and ambition seldom align.

On the track, every race is an audition. Off it, fortunes are decided in boardrooms, paddocks and whispered conversations.

Behind every race lies one simple truth: if you want to win, first you must survive.

The new weather algorithm seems to operate on a flawed notion of efficiency. "Let's just save up all the rain and drop it in one day, for effeiciency" Of course weather AI says "Hey rain! That's an amazing idea and dropping it in one day is genius. If you like I can help you make one big cloud!"

“Flipping over to a blank page, he sketched a map of this part of the Stray and drew stick figures to locate the three bodies. He drew a rock next to his bush and a large knife against the other together with a question mark over the body with no obvious cause of death. He suspiciously examined the foliage. How many more dead bodies had someone hidden in the bushes around here?”

It's book quote Wednesday and today's word is BUSY. #bookQW Reporter, George Maskell, has seen some police activity over the river from his office at the York Tribune. His boss sends him to find out what is happening. Download the first five pages www.vanessajknipe.com/s-projects-s...
A flyer for Her Borrowed Grave. A supercell storm coils like a poisonous black snake, its forked tongue is sheet lightning. A grey book half covers the storm. A question mark is cut out of the cover revealing letters from a fancier cover beneath.
Text reads:“Oi! What are you doing here?”
Bugger, George thought as a constable stepped between him and the crime scene. Crime reporting was harder than he expected, but he pulled up a hopeful grin. “I’m George Maskell, with the York Tribune. I’m covering the tomb opening. I saw all the busyness over here and came across to find out what was going on. What did you mean about the bodies on the Stray? I found one of them, you know.”
“You need to talk to the detective inspector,” the constable said.
“Is the man in the hospital involved in a plot against the museum opening of the Dark Age tomb?” George asked.
George was silently escorted to the man who had questioned him on Walmgate Stray.
DI Davies summoned his easy familiarity. “Mr Maskell, how can we help the York Tribune, this morning?”

Writing in a contemporary world as opposed to a sci-fi setting was much harder than I expected. In Sci-fi precarious, life and death situations are the norm. Trying to make being stuck in a traffic jam on a French Autoroute is much more challenging!
