Hymns for the Metronome
A jingle writer (Alyson Hannigan) takes a residency in a company town where every hour is sung on schedule, conducted by an unsmiling cantor (Gary Oldman) and timed to a vast subterranean metronome kept running by its last living tuner (Guy Pearce). When she improvises one bar, the town's perfect soprano (Dakota Fanning) hears it and stops mid-verse — and the machine begins, patiently, to retune them both.

Gary Oldman · Dakota Fanning · Alyson Hannigan · Guy Pearce
a Stanley Kubrick film
PG-13
for thematic intensity, a scene of peril, and brief strong language
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13
“The way Fanning just stops singing mid-note — dead silence, full chorus line — absolute chills.”

I was trying for awful but ended up with a critical hit
Four years on trial. One verdict overdue.
The Length of the Verdict
A deadpan teenager tried for felling her town's beloved water tower (Ellen DeGeneres) comes of age in the waiting rooms of a justice system that keeps adjourning. Her overmatched public defender (Carl Weathers) argues one day per season; the judge (Patrick Stewart) reads poetry into the record to fill the dead air; and the elderly neighbor whose testimony never quite finishes (Pupella Maggio) becomes the only witness to the girl's growing up. The verdict arrives after graduation does.

Ellen DeGeneres · Carl Weathers · Pupella Maggio and Patrick Stewart
a Jim Jarmusch film
PG-13
for thematic elements, teen drinking and brief strong language
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13
“Stewart reading Neruda into the record sits on my shelf next to Stranger Than Paradise.”
r/criterion user
“Weathers's summation, held in one unbroken take, earns the whole four-year wait.”

You can cancel at any time before your test starts.

Doing this as soon as possible helps other people get test slots.

If you cancel at short notice, you might need to pay again. You might also be eligible to apply for a refund.

I know I will have to vote for Alex Burghart at the next general election to keep out Reform, but I wouldn't lead with "local government has been given an extra source of revenue generation that will largely not fall on people from the UK" as a campaigning issue?

Dear Paul,

Just come back from your holiday?

Thinking about booking another holiday next year?

Unless you act right now, your next holiday could become a lot more expensive.

Andy Burnham is giving Labour Mayors unlimited powers to tax people going on holiday in the UK.

Think about what that means for you.

A weekend away in the Lakes. A family holiday in Cornwall. A city break in Edinburgh.

Under Labour's plans, local government leaders can add whatever tax they like on top of your hotel bill.
