London-Irish novelist and screenwriter. Here for bookish/arty/screenwriterly connections, laughs, ideas, chat and did I say laughs? Yes I wear pink shirts a shade too bright and too often. Nobody’s perfect.

I don’t agree with destroying her either. I just think she should not be part of the party forming the government of this country that contains millions upon millions of Irish people and their descendants. Her downplaying of centuries of explicit anti-Irish English racism is deeply offensive to me.

But Diane in her original letter says they didn’t suffer racism at all. Which is not how it felt to my Mum I can tell you as she brought it up only recently still bewildered and humiliated by it, 70 years later. But you know best June.

You’re obviously not someone who’s ever been told ‘You look so Irish’ then June. Door opened or door closed, it’s still racism in every possible respect. I don’t see the point in creating hierarchies of dehumanising disrespect.

As the son of Irish parents who were turned away from rooms in Birmingham by signs saying No Blacks, No Dogs, No Irish’ I found Ms Abbott’s original comments deeply wrong, ignorant and offensive. You want to see the 19th monkey portraits too? I hope they throw the book at her Robin.

“Research and experimentation “. So not really undergraduate degrees then… It seems logical a lot more of u/g level Stem will be very soon a moment’s work for AI than the arts. Based on HUMAN creativity, imagination and experience… The nerds may created their own demise. Or not. Who truly knows?

I can see a time in 5 years where there will no undergraduate degrees in Stem subjects? What’s the point? When AI does it all. Whereas English, history, philosophy…

This will be an absolute must for all levels of writers I’d say.

It’s very noble of them to sacrifice peace, prosperity and democracy itself for clicks, eyeballs and cheap journo drama.

I live in a nice part of London. We’re going to be swamped with all the smart interesting clever Americans fleeing President Trumpski and Comrade Musk. They’ll need to learn we don’t do earnest over here but apart from that, we’ll be fine.

I think I might become a born-again Christian just so I can really 100% believe that Trump and Elon Musk will be really going to Hell one day. At the moment I’m just living on a vague lapsed-Catholic hope that’ll be the case. It’s not quite enough.

You have to remember to Donald Trump everything and everyone - every bit of earth, sea, sky and air, every human soul - is just real estate waiting to be bought or sold. And only by him for his gain. That’s his landscape. Worldview. Narrative. There is no other. Goodnight and good luck.

After over 100 years of the American Empire, the citizens are finally gulled into electing their first Emperor. It’s a big fat orange shame for them and the world it’s the kind of bonkers one who marries his own horse.

Interesting to come back to Bluesky after a month or so. It’s already perhaps 1.5% crankier, political and less in love with its own loveliness. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. It’s probably only apparent if you’re not here all the time.

You were always brilliant together. A Spanish literature genius and an Astro-physicist. A match made for a lifetime. Remembering much joy, laughter and scary conversations. Very very very sad. Much love Richard. Px

Just coined a new word reading the first page of ‘Orbital’: Prizey. It felt right somehow. BTW. Is it the thinnest volume ever to win? It’s remarkanbky short for a Prizey book, don’t you think? Maybe the judges were a busy bunch this year and couldn’t be doing with door stoppers.

And they’ll have destroyed it with 20th century reductionist thinking in a 22nd century world. The short-sighted fools.

What’s crazy is that, in about 4-5 years time, when generative AI has made all the maths, engineering and chemistry departments the idiots worship utterly redundant, creativity, critical thinking and yes, philosophy will be the only subjects we can study.

Indeed.Makes this genuine and nuanced debate lesser than it should be. People should be 100% real about this. We all deserve it.

I’m sure you do. Also in unrelated news, let’s not forget the power of that great British myth: it’s only foreigners who are corrupt. The British good folk were just there or near there when ‘mistakes were made.’

It’s the only theme worth having. If I was 25 and reading this I’d have everything whipped away so I never had the slightest risk of turning into a parent. You should get sponsored by Durex my friend.

If you ever wondered what it would be like for a truly funny real person to visit a centerparcs.. wonder no more. It’s like Samuel Beckett rewriting a riff by Lenny Bruce round at Peter Kaye’s place. Brilliant.

The funniest, bleakest thing I’ve read online ever. Like a night out at a Tory Party conference with Peter Cook and Samuel Becket. Great work Disappointed. Your misery is our delight.

Hasn’t it been around ever since the first Bronze Age sawbones said: ‘I’ll just give them a wee drop of tincture of hemlock to help them sleep comfortably’? And every generation since.

It’s a beautiful evocative book about family and memory and grief and growing up. Ian Banks’ finest, to me anyway. He died way way too young.

My experience of Bluesky 6 months ago was of a nice puzzling building with levels and lots of light but no stairs and empty corridors with lots of locked doors. Still not 100% feeling any different but more students around so who knows.

This is a real threat to your country’s future. The successful societies in the future will be the ones maximising their Human Capital. Artists. Thinkers. Those who imagine. Feel. Create.

Do you love a sudden magical thing in a story, a book or, in this case an exhibition? This was in a tiny exhibition about the rise of Nazism I saw yesterday at the CaixForum in Madrid. I have no idea what it is or how it works. But it was a magical moment for me amid the grim reality.

There’s a lot of talk of menus and cookery in the novels. Cromwell’s first job is in a Bishop’s kitchen I think. Lots of dainty sweets and pastries. Very few lambs legs.
