My favourite horror director, Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Cure; Pulse), made a samurai movie!!! Based on an acclaimed novel, it’s a murder mystery set in a besieged castle and this may be the most excited I’ve been for a theatrical release in years. I just hope it plays somewhere near me. Link below.

RIP to a true master of the multicam sitcom. Cheers, Frasier, Taxi, Friends, Night Court—the list goes on. He’s arguably made me laugh more than any other director. If you love bts stories of the television industry his memoir is fantastic.

When I get nervous during a film or TV pitch I’ll remember my manager’s advice to just treat it as if I was still doing stand-up comedy. So that’s why I asked the two executives in the zoom what they were drinking and if they were together.

Got my MRI results. I thought my shoulder was arthritic the past 18 months. I have a SLAP tear of the labrum *and* a subscapularis tear. Doctor said “it tore right off the bone.” Orthopedic surgery is next. What a relief! I was afraid I was becoming an old man. Turns out I’m just too athletic!

Pitching a sitcom to one or two execs with their mics muted on zoom make me long for the days when I’d perform standup to a bar of a half dozen strangers.

I live in a small Canadian village of 1400. I’m throwing a goodbye party for one of the best neighbours I’ve ever had. I asked our mutual neighbour to round up his local BFFs. This is how I learn there’s a rumour that I don’t own a TV. And during NHL playoffs no less! 1/2
Text chain called Gentleman’s Club (I was just added to this group yesterday for this): “Gents! @Ted
is moving on Tuesday to the east coast... Last time to party with him. Zpm tomorrow night at @Paul-house.”Neighbour texts: “I'm from Montreal so big game for me to ight to watch. Won't be over at Zpm. I hear that Paul doesn't have a TV so I'm going to be a douche and bring a laptop over to watch the end of the game.”

I reply with a photo of a Bluejays game on Sportsnet saying “I have a TV! And Sportsnet!
Here's proof. Anyone's welcome to come watch the game here for third period.”Someone else replies “Hahah!
Perfect.”

Adapting my story optioned by a prod co a year ago. Rehearsing the pitch today before pitching it to a big prod co. If that goes well we pitch to their studio. If they love it I get paid to write a pilot. And if that goes spectacularly a series is green lit. This is called living the dream baby.

I love Hiro Murai’s ability to balance horror and comedy in Widow’s Bay. Been wanting more of that unsettling, hilarious creepiness ever since he directed the Teddy Perkins episode of Atlanta.

Widow’s Bay is wild and I learned 2 things about the series that totally makes sense if you’ve been watching it: 1) it was originally a Parks and Rec spec; and 2) the creator is the one in that viral Babadook meme.
From an interview:

Gold Derby: This script was originally a writing sample for you to get work in TV, right?

Katie Dippold: It was specifically for Parks and Recreation. The script was very different back then, but I think it gave [co-creator] Mike Schur an idea of my sense of humor, so I got it off of that. I worked there for Seasons 2, 3, and 4, but I kept revisiting this over the years. For some reason, I just kept getting pulled back to it. I think that initial version leaned too hard-comedy. I wanted to take the stakes and the tension and the horror seriously, and so l had to rip it apart and just keep brainstorming. It was kind of scary to rip it apart because for a while, nothing's working. Then eventually, once I got the character stories down and thought about where I wanted it to go, I started weaving the comedy back in.A tweet from Katie Dippold: “Tbt to Halloween when I dressed as the babadook but my friend's house had more of a grown ups drinking wine vibe.”

The photo is of her dressed up as the Babadook while two other people sit around dressed normally.

My younger brother is one of the most talented, focused people I know. When he puts his mind to something he gets it done. When we were kids we loved drawing. But it was clear he was much more talented than me so I turned my attention to writing. I’d write little stories and he’d illustrate them. /1

20 years ago CBC asked me to try doing sketch for a possible tv show. I’d never done sketch. I was a standup. So I found a young brilliant comic named Charlie Demers, asked him if he wanted to try it, and BUCKET was formed.
From a piece in The Georgia Strait dated February 23, 2006 titled “SketchFest’s Bucket kicks it”:

“Talk about making it look easy. Charles Demers and Paul Bae, two local standup comics with no sketch experience, put together a 50-minute show for SketchFest Vancouver in five weeks and absolutely blew everyone away. As Bucket, they were, without a doubt, the talk of the recent four-day festival.”Continuing from the previous review: “In a scene where the pair break down the fourth wall and talk about their sketch heroes, Demers lists John Belushi, John Candy, and Chris Farley before Bae tells him that "every funny, young, fat sketch artist dies early". This, of course, gets Demers paranoid. Not to worry, though. Turns out Bae is talking about the future-"two, three years from now". But as I watched, I couldn't help but think Demers has the same comedic energy as his late idols. I could easily see him on Saturday Night Live. That's how good he is.”Paul Bae and Charles Demers dressed in lab coats in the middle of a sketch scene. Charles wears a strange helmet for time travel.
