Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 11/03/2025Overall, I thought this was excellent and would love to revisit it. I definitely get the vibe that I'll uncover more to praise about its story. And, as a bonus, I saw YMS' review where he gave the film a 4/10. It's shit. 010
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 11/03/2025I can't lie: I'm bewildered by the Isabella Rossellini nomination. The production design and cinematography are fantastic and the sound mixing is very good for the most part. I like the score but I agree that it's obnoxiously loud in the mix at points -- mainly during the first hour. 110
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 11/03/2025Conclave was the Best Picture nominee that I was most excited to see and I was not disappointed. This movie is awesome. The screenplay is fantastic, full of thematically rich dialogue that's enhanced by terrific performances, especially from Ralph Fiennes, who's very understated. Though... 120
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 10/03/2025the plot demanded it -- but nothing too serious. Again, this is a good-to-solid film but definitely not worthy of a Best Picture nomination, like most musician biopics. Maestro was better (maybe). 000
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 10/03/2025this wasn't even his best performance from last year. I'm also not on board with the screenplay nomination: a lot of it was just the songs which led to some pacing issues; the characters are a bit limited; and there were quite a few instances of characters happening upon each other when... 100
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 10/03/2025The performances are generally good, but I hesitate to say that any of them were Oscar-worthy (maybe except for Barbaro). To be clear, Timothée Chalamet is good in this movie and it is cool that he actually sung the songs, but I'm disappointed that he was a front runner for Best Actor when... 100
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 10/03/2025Mangold's direction is as solid as usual, and this extends to the sound and costume design... but that's all I can really say: it's all solid. None of the technical elements stand out as being Oscar-worthy, especially when you compare them to other films that came out in 2024, like Dune: Part Two. 100
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 10/03/2025I've just seen A Complete Unknown and I think it's pretty good. As far as musician biopics go, it could have been a lot worse. In the end, it's a straightforward character study about a man who wanted to secure a legacy that would reach beyond and change the art movement he was attached to. 100

Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 03/03/2025To think that this list could have started with Emilia Pérez and ended with Crash. 000
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 03/03/2025When you're being nominated for acting as a lead role in this (allegedly) progressive film which is (allegedly) giving a narrative for underrepresented groups, it's kind of impossible to square that away with the fact that you yourself are a massive bigot. 010
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 03/03/2025After Gascón was nominated for Best Actress, she claimed that a lot of the criticism being driven towards her nomination was caused by fellow nominee Fernanda Torres' campaign team. Brazil then fired back by uncovering several recent tweets from Gascón revealing that she's a horrible person. 110

Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 03/03/2025Massive shoutout to Karla Sofía Gascón for single-handedly destroying any chance of Emilia Pérez winning Best Picture. What a legend. 150
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Hell, yeah! The Substance would be an awesome winner. 010
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025I understand the point you're making and I have been thinking a lot about it, but I'm not sure that I agree with this comparison. But, honestly, I'd rather talk about this in a VC than through text. There's a lot to dive into with this subject. 010
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Of the seven Best Picture nominees that I've seen from this year's line-up, Anora would be my ideal winner. 120
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025In conclusion, I'm happy for Adrien Brody to be nominated for Best Actor because he gives a truly excellent performance and most of it is definitively his own work; however, until more information comes out, I'm not exactly sure how I'd feel about him winning -- which is very likely at this point. 010
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025This wouldn't be fair at all for the other nominees or any actor who may have been snubbed from the category. The same applies to Felicity Jones' performance, although she has a much lower chance of winning in her category compared to Brody. 120
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025But, if it turns out that his Hungarian dialogue was replaced entirely, I will not be happy. In that case, a significant aspect of his performance has been removed in place of the editor's work, yet this will have contributed towards him winning the Oscar over other presumably strong candidates. 120
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025However, I'm not sure of how I feel about him winning: Dialogue editors using AI to alter small aspects of line deliveries in post-production is not a new thing; so, if this is all that's happened with The Brutalist, I don't have a problem with it. In this case, I'd be perfectly fine with the win. 110
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Now, regardless of which explanation is true, Brody still absolutely deserved to be nominated. Even when you ignore the non-verbal aspects of his performance, the vast majority of his dialogue is in English, which was apparently unaltered by Respeecher. The majority of his performance is his own. 110
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 02/03/2025Now that I've seen The Brutalist (a very good movie), I'm ready to give my thoughts on the Adrien Brody controversy. From what I've seen, it's unclear whether they used AI to replace all of Brody's Hungarian dialogue or if they used it to touch up specific pronunciations which sounded inauthentic. 120
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 01/03/2025I just suffered through YMS' defences for Emilia Pérez. I've never seen someone miss the point so fucking hard. How can you make these arguments and not realise how fucking worthless they are, unless you're being disingenuous? This really pissed me off. 040
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 27/02/2025The sixth episode of Invincible S3 was... interesting. My feelings are somewhat mixed right now, but I feel like this will change once the season ends (at which point, I plan to rewatch the whole show). 010

Reposted by Pat Rickmtsw @mtsw.bsky.social · 26/02/2025one of my favorite running storylines in culture is that people treat JAMES BOND as a franchise full of classic, beloved movies that has only recently lost its way, when the reality is that literally almost every single movie in the history of the franchise sucks. 5626037371
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 26/02/2025I don't think people who have this mindset when engaging with media should be allowed anywhere near these awards ceremonies. 071

Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 24/02/2025If it's not PR, that's better than the alternative where Disney screws over their only good Star Wars project; but I don't know. I just don't want to set myself up for disappointment like with Arcane S2--which I had much more confidence in than Andor. 110
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 24/02/2025The show was originally supposed to be 5 seasons but Disney forced Gilroy to condense it to 2, hence why S2's story will occur over 4 years--it's four seasons worth of storytelling. Knowing Gilroy, he could still smash it, but I'm being cautious. 110
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 24/02/2025The (very late) Andor S2 trailer was pretty cool but, after Arcane S2, I'm not using it as any indicator of the season's quality -- especially when considering the troubles that it's faced during production. Anything is possible. I hope it's good. 140
Pat Rick @patwrapped.bsky.social · 24/02/2025If you loved Arcane S1 for the same reasons I did, I recommend staying far away from Season 2. Just leave everything that happens beyond the first season to your imagination. 000
