It's nice and civilised here. Just a little quiet. Beer discussions never continue for very long. Perhaps that's because of the lack of rage-baiting trolls.

Did the Munich breweries call their beers Märzen and then start calling them Oktoberfestbier? Or did they always call it Oktoberfestbier? I'm not trying to win any argument point here, I'm genuinely interested.

Beer styles changing colour over time is a particular obsession of mine. Stout changing from brown to black in the 19th century. Mild going from pale to dark 1880 to 1920. The beer at Oktoberfest becoming paler is a more recent example. Why does this happen?

That doesn't exclude Münchner Oktoberfest from being a type of Märzen. For example, pale and dark Hefeweizen are differnet styles, whilst both being types of Hefeweizen.

Oktoberfestbier is still a Märzen, just a pale coloured one. I don't see why this is so difficult to understand. Märzen can be any colour. See Schlenkerla Märzen.

At one time, you weren't allowed to brew in Munich later than March. Or sometime around there. I can't remember the exact date. It's saint-something-or-other.

Er, Pale Lager didn't really spread that quickly. In the 1880s, most Lager was still either amber or dark. It's only in the 20th century that Pils really took off.
