Tomatoes have trouble pollinating over 90 degrees. What happens when our food supply crashes?

My dad was sent to Guadalcanal as a staging location for peleliu and Okinawa. I had an uncle in the army that was in the Phillipines behind enemy lines. Only a few from his batallion made it out.

I went to the Greenwood Cemetery in Bedford, VA June 5 (day before D-Day anniversary) and visited 9 graves of D-Day soldiers that died in that first wave. Bedford lost more men than any other community proportionally. I paid my respects at each grave. Here are some pictures.

I’ve made strawberry jam so far from the farm ( an hour away) where I picked them.

I had took 2 units of home economics in school. I learned to sew and cook. I remember even making strawberry jam. It was gendered then, so girls couldn’t take shop classes.

I’m buying different kinds of pasta and building my pantry to have a 3 month supply to buffer against price increases. Good thing to do it now. I cook a lot with pasta and rice. I also bake my own bread, so flour/wheat berry prices may go up too.

I’ve used this recipe from a local newspaper ( before the internet and newspapers would publish recipes), I use gardein crumbles instead of hamburger. Makes the best spaghetti sauce. I rarely buy store bought pasta sauce.

I’m adding to my pantry every time I shop. Also increased the size of my garden and trying container growing. Use the Flashfood app to buy last day food from Kroger. Thinking about getting pressure canner to can my soups and spaghetti sauce.

Same place PYO blackberries but you have fight the Japanese beetles for those.

Patti @pattirich.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
I found a place near me pick your own for $3/ pound. You have to fight the bugs, but I usually pick a couple of buckets full and throw some in the freezer. They are a pain to pick, but can’t beat the price.
Pick your own blueberries

(Reuters) - The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is the beginning of a "systemic agrifood shock" that could trigger a severe global food price crisis within six to 12 months, the United ‌Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said on Wednesday. www.reuters.com/world/middle...

I just got 25 pounds of rolled oats for 17.99. It’s a natural foods thrift store where they sell at cost. I picked up more flour and rice. I found some kamut wheat berries. I drive an EV and our electricity is lower for now…

I just went to cvs and picked up dental stuff in case my crowns fall out, and some orajel. I had a root canal recently which made me think of having oral care products stocked up. I had a crown fall out right before the shutdown for COVID. Interesting note: I saw a Lyme disease test there.

I’m trying to garden, but it’s a learning process. Snow peas that did great last year, I’ve gotten like 10 pods this year. I think I’ll make pea pesto with the plants. My potatoes and dill are going gangbusters though.

My potatoes are growing like a house on fire - I've never had that kind of success with them before. It's going to take us a while to build up more sufficiency here as well. I don't think we can ever get to total self-sufficiency but I think we can put a dent in our dependence on other stuff. :)

I have quinoa also, haven’t tried farro or bulgur. Found an interesting red rice (kind of like wild rice texture) and a sweet potato orzo at a bulk store.

I finally bought a camping dutch oven 12” cast iron and it was $10 more than last fall. I used some rewards to help offset. It is US made, but prices went up. I use it to cook when power out for awhile and camping. In. SHTF situation, I have a lot of wood to burn if I ran out of charcoal.
