When I poured concrete, you called a line around 5 PM every night. The boss left a long recording laying out who would be on which crew at what location the next day, complete with turn-by-turn directions to get you there, sometimes 200 miles away. I know a lot of weird Central Washington spots.

Definitely could do it to get you to my grandparents' house in Portland, 182 miles away

I think I could still give you precise, turn-by-turn directions from the house I grew up in in Yakima to the SeaTac airport 140+ miles away

Looked up the route beforehand, memorized directions, tried to keep a mental map of the area in question in my head. I still try to do this whenever possible, it makes driving a lot more fun!

I feel really silly and can only apologize to the UK’s commercial fishing industry, such as it is after Brexit

Mea culpa: I posted a factoid about Games Workshop’s total economic value relative to the fishing industry and the UK economy that was incorrect. Games Workshop’s total revenue in the last fiscal year was a little over half of the entire fishing industry, not larger. Check your sources, Patrick!!!

Ok, so, I got excited about this and knocked out a 2,000-word draft this evening. I guess I really, really wanted to write about 40k.

Depends on when I finish the draft, how much work the fantastic editor has to do to make it better, and when they want to run it! A few weeks, probably?

The other option, the more realistic one that accords far more neatly with the vast bulk of American political history, is quietly hating your neighbors while never discussing your ideological differences. That's as American as apple pie.

It's easy to say we should be having these conversations if you don't have to engage with the reality of what these people believe, or the implications in your day-to-day life. I don't need to debate World War II with the guy who thinks the world would be better if the Nazis won; real guy I know!

I don't have to respect or engage with people who have developed such bigoted views of Muslims, without ever meeting one, that they're hyperventilating over the thought of their children dating a Muslim in the future. That's a real conversation going around my neck of the woods in a real place.

I appreciate the attempt to build bridges here but: 1) there's not a single thing stopping Republican voters from asking genuine, curious questions from the other side of the river; and 2) this genuinely underestimates how deranged and nasty baseline MAGA discourse has become. I don't need that.

I looked up one of my old co-workers on a whim a couple of years ago and was shocked, absolutely shocked, that his obituary said he was 65 when he died. He was practically ancient.

The guys I worked with were not in good shape. It's not hard to figure out why rates of alcohol and drug abuse in blue-collar industries are through the roof: people self-medicate. The physical toll is simply not comprehensible to people who have only worked in offices.

My total time working in concrete added up to about 10 months. It left me with carpal tunnel syndrome, a back injury, and a bunch of the skin ripped off my left arm from a supervisor's easily avoidable error. I loved it, learned a ton from it, but I'd be on my way to an early grave if I'd stayed in.

I'm only going to say this one time: I have absolutely zero tolerance for or sympathy with blanket anti-religion sentiments, especially those that assume religious people are somehow lacking in reasoning because they believe in God. You're telling on yourself. Institutions, practices? Another story.

If the things you say are designed solely to get other people to believe what you want them to, or do what you want them to, the concept of someone who isn't going to deviate from their beliefs out of convenience doesn't scan.

There's no amount of money, no possible threats, no leverage that can make the fucking POPE go out in public and say a machine can be conscious. Even the shitty popes of the last few centuries would almost certainly agree with him!

At a really fundamental level Leo XIV is just a person with sound, well-reasoned, moral stances on the world and how life should be lived who isn't afraid to say those things in public. That kind of person simply does not make sense to business leaders and politicians for whom speech is convenience.

Somehow not everyone is aware of fact alluded to below. So one more time: John Roberts, Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett were all on GWBush 2000 'Florida Recount' team. (Which made GWB first prez in 112 yrs to 'win' after losing popular vote. Now they 'impartially' rule on our future.)

New Past Lives: Around 600 CE, a man died and was buried near the city of Verona in northern Italy. He had led an interesting life, including a migration from present-day Hungary. Most intriguing of all, his right hand had been amputated and replaced with a knife prosthesis. pod.link/1852618120/e...

Just talked with the fantastic archaeologist Neil Price about his new book on the Viking Age, "The Sea-King and the Sorceress," and can't recommend it highly enough to you all - extraordinary book written by a true master of the material, full of texture and detail and, frankly, life.

I got to revisit barbarian migrations and what we can learn about them now after another decade-plus of archaeoscientific work and the proper application of migration theory, and I got to talk about a guy with a literal knife for a hand. If you've never listened to Past Lives, give this one a try.

This is one of my favorite episodes of any show I've done, ever. The subject was almost certainly a Longobard warrior who accompanied King Alboin on his descent into Italy in 568 and was involved in the subsequent conquest. I don't think I'd want to hang out with him, but he had to have been wild.
