On this day in 1849, Edgar Allan Poe met his maker. In remembrance of literature’s protagonist, here are glimpses of some Poe materials that have passed through Patrick’s Rare Books. #books #onthisday #edgarallanpoe #history #october

If you, like me, are on autopsy service tomorrow, set aside part of your evening for playing guitar. The antiquarian books, and the grave below, will wait.

Help me solve a mystery. I found this loose inside in an 18th century anatomy book. It depicts basicranial fractures (so it’s trauma/pathology, not anatomy). But I haven’t been able to find its source. Was it cut from another book? Or is it a one off?

As early as the 1550s, Gabrielle Falloppia was teaching surgical options for breast health, but said he would not wish these operations on anyone. (This engraving from our copy of Pancoast’s Operative Surgery. Make it yours today.)

This engraving (shown here in Cowper’s Anatomia, but originally Bidloo) inspired the scene in my novel, You Were Darkness, where Govard Bidloo shows Idelette how to begin the dissection of a cadaver’s back.

Sorry to everyone who is waiting on a response from me. I’m way behind on my emails/messages. Post op pain meds made me very drowsy for a whole week. But I think I’m finally shaking it and will have a fully functional brain again by end of this week.

Graph means to record. Tome means to cut. The Myographia is a record of the muscles of the body. The Myotomia is a dissection of the muscles of the body.
