you are rewarded with some pretty views
A photo of Sutro Tower bathed in the early morning sun shot from Golden Gate Park. In the foreground stand a silhouetted lamppost and a large Monterey Cyprus tree. The sun is just about to rise from the left of the picture and it's a glow of warm orange hues.

this image is incredibly stressful and will soon be a thing of the past.

Excited for this Dolly tribute livery that I put together for the team running a 24 hour @iracing.com event this weekend.
A screenshot of the iRacing simulator showing a side profile shot of a Dallara P217 in a Dolly Parton themed livery. There is a photo of Dolly reading on the side, and another of her on the main spine wing with the accompanying text "Jolene! Please don't take my racing line". Dollywood butterflies adorn the body panels. There is a ring around the gas cap that says "Runs on Ambition"A top down photo of the same car in iRacing showing two boxes of text that read "If you can read this" and "then thank Dolly! <3" The text "We will always love you" runs over the top of the doors. "Working 9-5" appears in block capitals on the rear wing.A 45 degree side shot of the car showing the long magenta racing stripes that run all along the yellow base. The inside front wings have "Dollywood" logos stenciled on them. Dollywood butterflies appear to be bursting from the front air intakes.

This second Gaussian splat turned out way better than I had expected. I took less footage than the first due to it being in the middle of a thoroughfare and not wanting to interfere with those running/cycling by. share.patrickod.com/tyre_v1.html

Graphs that make you go 😄
A series of three graphs side by side showing natural gas vs solar energy consumption in GWh in California for the months January-June for the years 2024 to 2026. In 2024 gas was dominant for the entire period. By 2026 Solar is now beating gas production in all but a short portion of late January / early February. The average solar production in 2026 is approximately 160 GWh to that of 110-ish for natural gas.

For whatever reason SFMTA are no longer able to get warranty case numbers for their most recent parts failures as of December 2024 from all vendors. I suspect the quadrupling of their maintenance budget was them stockholding for the long term knowing that all will not be replaced.
Summary of drive shaft bolt failures in the 30 foot bus fleet covering 12 vehicles starting 11/10/24 most recent 01/28/25. The last 8 cases starting 12/13/24 have no ENC Warranty Case Number assigned with an * instead. The table note reads *ENC System not generating claim numbers, but claim was submitted via e-mail.

Patrick O'Doherty @patrickod.com · 17/07/2026
TIL that SFMTA were able to procure these _specific_ busses because the Georgia DOT had previously approved the vendor for their own purposes and SFMTA rules permit them to use the work of other public agencies if they consider it in their interest.
Page 1 of SFMTA-2021-07, an agreement between San Francisco and Creative Bus Sales for 30 hybrid buses. Recital C cites S.F. Admin Code Section 21.16, which lets SFMTA piggyback on another public agency's competitive procurement process (here, Georgia's) when it's found to be in the City's best interests

Patrick O'Doherty @patrickod.com · 17/07/2026
it turns out that the brake bracket issue is just one of many fleet defects that SFMTA have issued, to the point that they've 4x'd their maintenance budget for the fleet (250k to $1MM).
Screenshot of a document list from a FOIA/public records response, showing PDF filenames for SFMTA fleet defect records. Documents SF-CBS-003 through SF-CBS-015 cover fleet defects and manufacturer defect responses for bus component failures including vapor doors, wiring workmanship, coolant leaks, surveillance systems, leaf springs, start buttons, drive shaft bolts, and differentials.

This tick tock where the RA emails here the original clean dataset 9 days after Gino has distributed an altered one is 👨‍🍳 perfection.
Table describing the chronology of events in the Francesco Gino case with respect to custody of the survey dataset and its altered vs unaltered form. The table shows that Gino's RA emailed her a clean copy July 16th 2010. Gino emailed an altered form of this dataset with additional entries to her coauthors 2 days later. 9 days after *that* the RA emails Gino again with the clean, unaltered dataset, suggesting that Gino not the RA is the source of the edits.

I absolutely adore the texture that the climate and weathering leaves on older buildings here in Australia
A photograph of a weathered old vertical name sign for "Patersons" furniture store hanging on a building on Smith street in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia. The green backing paint is chipped and mostly flaked away exposing cream underneath. The letters are bold and golden. The white paint on the exterior of the building is flaking with years of high humidity weathering having taken its toll.

Social media post from Thing Bad (@Merman_Melville):
