A couple of amazingly detailed ojime beads from Japan, both late 19th century. They are very small, under an inch, and both are hand carved from wood that has been darkened with either paint or lacquer. See ALT for history and info about the ojime bead. #handmade #antique #ojime #bead #Japan #art
An ojime bead is a small, movable sliding bead threaded onto the cord of a traditional Japanese carrying case like an inrō or tobacco pouch (sagemono).
The word comes from o (meaning cord or string) and shimeru (meaning to fasten or tighten).
It sits on the double cord between the container (inrō) and the toggling ornament (netsuke). Sliding the bead up tightens the cord to keep the container closed; sliding it down releases the cord so the case can be opened.
They are typically small, averaging under an inch (about 1.5 to 2 cm) in diameter, with a vertical center hole (himotoshi) through which the cords pass.
They are crafted from diverse materials such as carved ivory, wood (like boxwood), bone, lacquer, porcelain, agate, coral, jade, and mixed metals (such as shakudō, a gold-and-copper alloy).
Evolving from simple functional fasteners during the Edo period (1603–1868), ojime became miniature works of art, often carved into intricate shapes like animals, figures, fruit, or mask motifs. Today, they are also collected or worn as modern jewelry.

Storm God Mosaic Mask
Maya. Guatemala. c. AD 200-600.
jadeite and shell tesserae set over a wooden core with resin.
Collection: The Al Thani Collection.
Now on display at the Hôtel de la
Marine, Paris.
Look closely at the image: spiral eyes, broad nose, round earspools and a parted mouth lined with orange shell. That orange is spondylus, a Pacific spiny oyster.
Conservators studying a closely related jade mosaic mask from a royal tomb at Chochkitam, Guatemala, noted that spondylus turns warm and flesh-like when backlit, making the face seem to come alive. That mask lay on a king's chest and has been read as a manifestation of the storm god.

The Beersheba Venus carved ivory c. 4500-3500 BCE Beersheba culture Israel #handmade #carved #hippopotamus #ivory #Beersheba #venus #figurine #fertilityfigure #Negev #desert #Beershebaculture #Israel #chalcolithic #period #pregnant #woman #ivoryfigure #ivorycarving #Egyptian #predynastic #influence
The Beersheba Venus, a small prehistoric figurine of a pregnant woman carved from hippopotamus ivory. A fertility figure.
Discovered in Beersheba, Israel, and associated with the Chalcolithic period (circa 4500–3500 BCE).
The headless, 12 cm tall statuette features a polished surface, hands resting on the hips, a prominent pregnant belly with a drilled navel, and decorated pubic markings.
It is currently part of the collection at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
A group of objects made of hippopotamus tusks was discovered in Beersheba. In a workshop found in a subterranean dwelling, a complete canine tooth was revealed, together with a stone worktable, cutters' tools and ivory splinters. This evidence of a local ivory industry, in addition to the large number and variety of ivory objects that were found, suggests the existence of a prolific and creative school of highly skilled artisans.

Carved from a single piece of tusk, this mysterious figurine – beautifully preserved though headless and missing part of the right arm – is a nude female, apparently in an advanced state of pregnancy, with a large circular aperture in the place of her navel. Her hands rest on her hips, and her legs are slightly flexed as if moving; her pubic hairs are marked by drill holes, which were probably originally filled with bitumen or another material. The figurine, which is curiously lifelike, has a smooth, highly-polished surface. It somewhat resembles Egyptian Predynastic ivories.

Portrait Head Architectural Fragment stucco, paint c. 300-900 CE Maya culture Uxmal, Mexico #handmade #stucco #paint #portraithead #head #architecturalfragment #MayaCulture #Uxmal #Mexico #precolumbian #prehispanic #Mesoamerican #ancientart #art #sculpture #stuccoart #MayanStucco #precolumbianart
It is likely that this modeled stucco head from the Uxmal site is part of an architectural decoration and that it refers to a member of the ruling family or honors an ancestor. It is associated with the building known as the Governor's House, the main architectural theme of which is a series of overlapping figure heads carved in stone representing the god of rain, Chaak. In impressive temples and palaces, jutting sculptures were an important part of the architectural design, often representing mythological beings or rulers. Inscriptions, in addition to being decorative, also sent various messages to the observer.
Modeled stucco - lime-based plaster - is one of the great art forms developed in pre-Columbian times. Entire cities were covered with stucco. Architectural sculpture such as figure heads, free-standing sculpture, wall coatings, floors-all were made with stucco. The beautifully made face on this piece can be seen as an ancient portrait, with adornments such as ear ornaments and a headband, but the body paint stands out, probably indicating ceremonial activities. Unfortunately, due to its fragility, stucco art - especially on the exterior of structures - was the first to
erode or be destroyed after buildings were abandoned. Because of this, stucco representations are not abundant in collections of Maya artifacts. This piece should be regarded as one of the most significant, because of its color and its creator's artistic skill.

The Acrobat of Colima Vessel terracotta c. 200 BCE to 300 CE Colima culture Western Mexico, Colima #handmade #terracotta #vessel #AcrobatofColima #Colima #culture #precolumbian #mesoamerican #pottery #precolumbianpottery #acrobat #art #ancientart #sculpture #shafttombtradition #burial #afterlife
Dating to c. 200 BC-AD 300, this remarkable ceramic vessel from Colima, western Mexico, takes the form of a male acrobat performing an extraordinary contortion. Rather than simply decorating the vessel with a human figure, the ancient artist transformed the acrobat's body into the vessel itself, with his inverted head resting below his torso and his legs dramatically curved above him. The sculpture captures a fleeting display of flexibility, balance and physical skill in permanent clay and reflects the lively interest in the human body characteristic of the ceramic traditions of ancient West Mexico.
The vessel is today held in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, as part of the Michael C.
Rockefeller Memorial Collection.
The pre-Columbian Colima culture was an ancient Mesoamerican society that thrived in western Mexico (primarily in the modern state of Colima, as well as parts of Jalisco and Michoacán) from roughly 300 BCE to 600 CE, and is famous for its rich Western Mexico shaft tomb tradition.
The people lived in small agricultural villages and regional chiefdoms rather than massive imperial centers. They farmed maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers in fertile volcanic valleys.
Unlike central Mexican groups, they built modest structures on platforms using river boulders and wattle-and-daub, though regional centers like La Campana featured larger ceremonial mounds.
Colima culture is globally celebrated for its burnished, reddish-brown terracotta pottery. Artisans crafted hollow ceramic figurines with expressive, clean lines and dynamic forms.

A rare sterling silver & rhodonite modernist Flying Saucer ring from Kaunis Koru in Finland c. 1970s - measures 1.25” diameter at top, size 8 US! Available... www.rubylane.com/item/1879775... #handmade #kauniskoru #finland #pekkapiekainen #modernist #spaceage #flyingsaucer #ring #wearableart #art
A super rare vintage 1970s handmade sterling silver and rhodonite modernist asymmetrical geometric design cocktail ring designed by Pekka Piekainen during his time at the Kaunis Koru design studio in Helsinki, Finland. An exceptional ring in all regards! Large size, incredible design, superbly crafted, and incredibly rare! The Kaunis Koru workshop is known for its beautiful jewelry, and this ring is a great example of the finest! They are also know for using top quality stones, and the rhodonite cabochon in this ring is a beautiful example with an almost even split between the pink and the black areas. Also, notice that the stone is set at an angle to the plane of the 'dish' section of the ring, and that the bezel tapers around the stone adding to the asymmetrical design! Subtle but glorious detail! Measures just over 1-1/4" diameter at top, rises 3/8" above the finger, size 8, and weighs a substantial 14.2 grams total. The stone measures 1/2" in diameter. Marked as shown with Kaunis Koru studio mark, silversmith mark for Olavi Wehmersuo, the Finnish national mark for silver, "925H" for sterling silver (the H stands for the Finnish word for silver, "Hopea"), Helsinki city mark, and date letter "T7" for 1972. Kaunis Koru was a design studio, so they never made the items themselves, they contracted with local silversmiths, in this case Wehmersuo. Over the years, most of the greats of Finnish Silver design worked at Kaunis Koru including Pekka Piekainen, Bjorn Weckstrom, Mirjam Salminen, Paula Häiväoja, and many others. I have been a fan of Finnish Design for many years, in particular the metal arts and jewelry, and I have never seen this ring design before or since! Super rare design no doubt created by Piekainen in the 1960s, this example made a bit later in the early 1970s. Excellent vintage condition.

A Muisca ceramic head originating from present-day Colombia, dating between A.D. 1200 and 1600.
Crafted by the indigenous Muisca culture of the central Colombian highlands.
Made of clay and paint, it features distinct slit eyes, a slit mouth, a sharp nose, and an ornately decorated headdress or crown.
This artifact was not an isolated mask; it was originally part of a larger ceramic figure that stood roughly three-and-a-half feet tall. It depicts a high-ranking individual, likely a warrior or chieftain.
The Muisca Civilization was an advanced indigenous pre-Columbian culture that flourished in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense of the Eastern Ranges of the Andes in central Colombia from roughly 600 to 1600 CE.
Spanned about 25,000 square kilometers in the heart of modern-day Colombia, including present-day Bogotá (which they called Bacatá).
Formed a loose confederation of sovereign polities rather than a centralized empire, led by rulers such as the zipa, zaque, and iraca.
Built circular, communal houses called bohios using wood, clay, and thatched straw rather than massive stone monuments.
Cultivated staples adapted to high altitudes, including corn, potatoes, and quinoa.
Rich in natural resources like coal, copper, emeralds, gold, and massive salt deposits.
Used blocks of salt, coal, and emeralds as a form of currency for an active barter system with neighboring groups.
Practiced polytheistic worship centered on nature deities, including Sué (the Sun) and Chía (the Moon).
Celebrated a ritual at Lake Guatavita where a leader covered in gold dust cleansed himself in the water, inspiring the European legend of El Dorado.
Created intricate votive figurines called tunjos from gold and tumbaga (a gold-copper alloy) using advanced lost-wax casting techniques.
Spoke Muysccubun, a Chibchan language that was suppressed and banned during the colonial era but leaves a lasting legacy in modern Colombian place names.
Currently housed at the National Museum of the American Indian.

The Aparicio site was built by the Classic Veracruz culture (sometimes called the Gulf Coast culture).
This civilization flourished in the modern-day Mexican state of Veracruz during the Mesoamerican Classic period, roughly between about 400 to 700 CE.
This civilization was intensely focused on the Mesoamerican ballgame. Their largest and most famous urban center was El Tajín, located further north of Aparicio, which boasts at least 18 individual ballcourts.
Aparicio is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Vega de Alatorre in Veracruz, Mexico.
The site is famous for its well-preserved, relief-carved stone plaques (ballcourt panels) depicting ball players.
These famous carvings frequently depict a decapitated ball player with seven serpents sprouting from their neck, symbolizing fertility and ritual sacrifice associated with the game.

The King of Egypt as a Lion Subduing a Nubian carved gold, Egyptian Blue pigment c. 1279-1213 BCE Reign of Ramesses II Ancient Egypt #ancient #art #ancientart #propaganda #ancientegypt #RamessesII #ideology #conquest #newkingdom #egypt #gold #EgyptianBlue #pigment #flywhisk #whip #MetMuseum #NYC
This piece, fashioned from Egyptian Blue and gold, presents a striking image of the head of a Nubian man engulfed by the jaws of a lion.
Egyptian blue is the world's oldest known synthetic pigment, created over 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt to mimic expensive natural stones like lapis lazuli and turquoise. Made by heating a precise mixture of silica (sand), copper (like malachite or metal filings), calcium (lime/chalk), and an alkali flux (such as natron or plant ash). Heated in a kiln at temperatures between 800°C and 1000°C (about 1,470°F to 1,830°F) for hours to form a glassy blue compound, which was then cooled, crushed, and ground into a powder paint.
Though compact in scale, the piece is monumental in its ideological intent. Most likely the terminal of a ceremonial fly whisk or whip, the handle is more than decorative; it is a potent visual expression of royal power and Ancient Egyptian supremacy.
The lion, sculpted in lustrous gold and detailed with stylised precision, symbolises the pharaoh himself, a living god and the ultimate authority over Egypt and its dominions. Its grip upon the Nubian's head is not merely violent but
symbolic, embodying Egypt's dominance over its southern neighbours and reiterating the pharaoh's divine role as protector and conqueror.
The object is said to originate from Qantir, in the eastern Delta region of Egypt, the site of ancient Pi-Ramesses, the grand capital city established by Ramesses II. In the king's day, this area would have been a flourishing centre of political power, military activity, and artistic production. Situated strategically near the route to the Levant, Pi-Ramesses was both a royal residence and a critical base for Egypt's northern campaigns. Its palatial complexes, temples, and extensive workshops made it one of the most
important urban centres of the New Kingdom.
This object is now on display at the Met Museum, NYC, after being gifted by the Norbert Schimmel Trust in 1989.

Grasshopper Figure carved hematite c. 1800-1700 BC Old Babylonian culture Babylon #handmade #carved #hematite #grasshopper #art #sculpture #ancientsculpture #ancientart #Babylonia #culture #Babylon #EuphratesRiver #nature #beauty #ancientBabylonia #fertility #omen #astrology #locusts #foodsource
In ancient Babylonia and the broader Mesopotamian culture, grasshoppers (and their swarming phase, locusts) held a multi-layered, dual meaning. They represented both a positive symbol of fertility and abundance and a destructive force of nature used in divination and dietary sustenance.
In their solitary, non-destructive form, grasshoppers were viewed by Babylonians as symbols of the natural cycle, fertility, and abundance. Because they appeared in large numbers during agricultural cycles, they were tied to the life-giving forces of the earth.
This famous example is a beautifully detailed, nearly 4,000-year-old Babylonian stone weight carved from hematite in the shape of a grasshopper (c. 1800–1700 BCE). Used in markets for fair trade transactions, the grasshopper shape on the weight likely invoked blessings of agricultural prosperity and nature.
When solitary grasshoppers crowded together and transformed into swarming locusts, their meaning shifted drastically. To the Babylonians, a locust swarm was a catastrophic event that could strip fields bare and cause widespread famine.
Babylonians were deeply invested in astrology and divination. Grasshopper and locust behavior was carefully documented in cuneiform omen series (such as the Šumma Ālu). A swarm of grasshoppers appearing in a specific city or flying in a particular direction was interpreted as a direct message or warning from the gods, usually predicting economic ruin, military invasion, or divine displeasure.
Despite the threat they posed to crops, grasshoppers were heavily utilized by Babylonians in daily practical life.
Babylonians actively harvested locusts and grasshoppers for food. Cuneiform records show that mass amounts of these insects were caught, preserved in brine, and transported over hundreds of kilometers to be eaten as a protein-rich delicacy or everyday staple.

István Orosz (b. 1951) Hungarian graphic artist, illustrator, poster designer, and animated film maker. He was trained as a graphic designer at the University of Arts and Design in Budapest. After graduation in 1975 he began to deal with theatre as a stage designer and animated film. Later when poster came to the center of his interest also made mainly theatre, movie and exhibition posters.
His individual graphic works of art are often related to postmodernism by archaic forms, art historical references, stylistic quotations and playful self-reflection. Themes of the natural sciences, especially of geometry and optics appear in most of his works. He is also concerned with the theories of vision and sight such as the way the beholder’s hypothetical expectations influence the visual and empirical perception of spatial constructions. He is likely to experiment with the extremes, paradoxes of the representation of the perspective to create the illusion of space.

The Colima culture was a prominent pre-Columbian society in western Mexico that flourished roughly from 300 BCE to 600 CE.
Thrived in the fertile valleys and coastal plains of the modern Mexican state of Colima and surrounding areas.
Roots trace back to the early Capacha culture (around 1500 BCE), with its main artistic peak occurring during the Late Pre-Classic and Classic periods (300 BCE – 600 CE).
Known for deep, bottle-shaped underground burial chambers containing rich ceramic grave goods meant to accompany the dead.
Famous for expressive, smooth redware and burnished terracotta effigies of hairless dogs (Xoloitzcuintli), which were believed to guide souls to the underworld.
