Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 13/09/2026It took years to actually have some pears to harvest at the end of the season. Every other year we’ve had them all taken by weather and animals. 030

Political affiliation certainly affects things, but I'd like to believe there's still a hunger for kind, empathetic role models. www.uml.edu/docs/archive... 220
Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 24/08/2026We’ve had this Korean pear tree for ~10 years. Every year, our pears have been taken by animals, so we’ve tried various deterrents. This year we completely covered the tree and cinched the net at the bottom with a rope. But raccoons are indefatigable, and they found their way in. 250

Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 30/07/2026Excellent essay. I’m not sure if this counts as “serious panic,” but Shipton (1936) wrote Irish immigrants to New England in the 1730s produced a “violent case of social indigestion” due to their “Celtic temperament and manners.” kevishere.com/2026/07/24/t... 010

Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 27/07/2026In 1992, Thérèse Caherty and colleagues in Ireland published a series of essays with the provocative title “Is Ireland a Third World Country?” One of the editors, Caitríona Ruane, wrote that “the answers were as various and diverse as those participating,” highlighting the ambiguity of the concept. 110
Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 27/07/2026Miller, Bovino, Trump et al. have said they want to remove “Third World” people, perhaps 100 million of them. At one point all the qualities ascribed to 3rd world people were applied to Irish Americans and others. So make it 200 million people. kevishere.com/2026/07/22/t... 240

Patrick Clarkin @patrickclarkin.bsky.social · 23/07/2026I recall a classmate in grad school scolding another for saying "Third World," since it was dehumanizing. The phrase has had a comeback, perhaps *because* it's dehumanizing. Here are some examples + speculation on how it could have applied to Irish immigrants. kevishere.com/2026/07/22/t... 120
