At just 10 years old, Northern Ireland currently has one of the lowest ages of criminal responsibility in the world. Children belong in schools and playgrounds, not in police cells and prisons. It’s time to raise the age #TenIsTooYoung

TalkTV paying substantial damages and making a public apology to Marcus Hunter-Neill is a huge vindication against the smear campaign targeting drag performers and LGBTQ+ people. People spreading lies - and politicians jumping on the bandwagon - should reflect on the outcome. 🌈📚

New Police Ombudsman report makes for shocking reading. A 14-year-old girl was among the 36 victims of predatory behaviour by male PSNI officers - many identified as 'sharks' - accused of abuse of position for sexual purposes. More accountability is needed - including dismissals and prosecutions.

Sunday World journalist Hugh Jordan has revealed he is one of the 8 journalists now known to have had their telephone data accessed by the PSNI. All almost certainly unlawfully. He was informed by Angus McCullough KC, who has investigated PSNI use of covert surveillance powers.
Sunday World article: summary -- The Sunday World’s Hugh Jordan was informed this week that he was one of eight reporters who had been spied on by the PSNI. Today the veteran reporter says the authorities should always remember that journalism isn’t a crime.

The most telling aspect of Donald Trump's state visit to the UK is that it's all taking place behind closed doors, walls and high barriers designed to keep ordinary people out of sight. Speaks volumes.

Photo caption: Security fences have been set up in front of Windsor Castle

There have been protesters in Windsor with anti-Trump placards while US flags are hung along the high street in welcome.

But the visiting president won’t see either opponents or supporters, because the visit is going to take place entirely away from the public.

There are 2938 publications on the Department of Education NI website, some of them going back to the 1980s. But it is a research report about the experiences of LGBT pupils in NI post-primary schools that the Department has chosen to delete to keep the site 'up to date'. 🤔

Given that around a quarter of those arrested (14 out of 53) were children, the % of adult male racist rioters previously reported to the police for domestic violence is even greater than the 36% reported here.
"In the ensuing days of violent disorder, described by police as "racist thuggery", families were burned out of their homes and more than 100 police officers were injured.

Around a quarter of those arrested (14) were aged under 18.

According to police data, minors are statistically rare perpetrators of domestic abuse, accounting for less than 4% of cases each year.

Last month, The Detail reported that almost half of those arrested for the August 2024 race riots in Belfast had previously been reported for domestic abuse. Nine of the 48 people arrested were minors."

Excellent news. Thank you @nationaltrust.org.uk This 'gondola' half-way up Slieve Donard is an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Time to pull the plug, Newry Mourne & Down Council.
Irish News - National Trust move puts Mournes gondola in doubt
JOHN MANLEY POLITICAL CORRESPONDENT

PLANS to build a cable car and visitor centre on the slopes of Slieve Donard have suffered a significant setback with the National Trust pausing its engagement with the council behind the project.

Without the trust’s approval, Newry Mourne and Down District Council’s multi-million-pound flagship project cannot be built.

The conservation charity’s move comes as it emerged that it was forced to submit a freedom of information request to the council and the Department for the Economy in an effort to secure the full business case for the controversial venture, which it stresses it does not endorse.

The trust, which owns Thomas’s Quarry where the planned visitor centre would be located, last year signed a memorandum of understanding with the council, yet to date it has not received the requested document.

Forty journalists and lawyers make complaints to PSNI snooping review

A review set up to investigate PSNI snooping operations has received around 50 responses.

The McCullough Review was established last year after it emerged that police has been spying on journalists.

The review, headed by London based barrister Angus McCullough KC, is focused on journalists, lawyers and non-governmental organisations, while the Policing Board and Police Ombudsman also fall under its terms of reference.

In a report to the policing board last year the PSNI admitted making 823 applications for communications data for journalists and lawyers over a 13-year period from 2011-2024.

Westminster committee to examine PSNI snooping as part of ‘press freedom’ inquiry
NI Affairs Committee to hold hearings next month

By Connla Young, Crime and Security Correspondent
January 23, 2025 at 6:00am GMT
A prominent Westminster committee will investigate the extent of PSNI spying on journalists, lawyers and human rights campaigners when it launches an inquiry into press freedom next month.

The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee (NIAC) Inquiry into Press Freedoms and Safety in Northern Ireland comes after it emerged police have been spying on journalists and others on an industrial scale over many years.

Investigative journalists, Barry McCaffrey and Trevor Birney, who were recently found to have been unlawfully snooped on by police, are expected to appear at the committee.

Last month the powerful Investigatory Powers Tribunal (IPT) found the PSNI and Metropolitan Police approved a snooping operation against the pair.
The London-based tribunal looks at complaints from people who believe they have been the victim of unlawful covert interference.
