This just made me realise that i'd been pining for some "Tice and Lowe in Africa". More please!

Dead Space (1 and 2) were awful for this! Very few areas where it was quiet / creepy, allowing you to explore with a sense of tension / dread about it. It was just Room > Hoard of enemies > Corridor > Hoard of enemies > New Room > Hoard of enemies + Second wave. Ha! No attempt at atmosphere at all.

Unbelievable game this. Played it as a teenager and it was the first time i'd been too disturbed by a game to want to keep playing, but too intrigued by the game to want to put it down. I was in a constant state of rapturous tension for the month or so it took me to beat it. This is a great read! 🙏

How One Apocalyptic BBC Movie Scarred a Generation of U.K. Schoolchildren | KQED
'Threads' was a 2-hour horror movie that broke down, step-by-step, what happens to people caught up in a nuclear bombing. Teachers promptly showed it to classrooms of young teens.

This film was shown to CHILDREN in high schools over here in the UK. Scarred a generation.

Had absolutely no idea Drug Church were touring UK. Shame I won't be able to make the Manchester date. It's my own fault for being out of touch and 43 years old.

The piss-taking is gratefully accepted! I knew exactly what you're talking about and decided it would be fun to jump in and display the very behaviour being called out haha! We need more of this light-hearted caper amongst daily interactions 🙌

When I read your OP and saw you worked in record shops, I actually thought "He MUST know there is no The"? But I simply could not help myself. I was a passive, detached observer watching helplessly as my thumbs typed the reply. Now i realise I had a reputation to uphold as a member of said fanbase.

Hahaha! It appears that I have been rumbled! 🤦‍♂️ Very well-played, sir. Flawless execution 👏

Whilst fully aware that i am about to substantiate your claim completely here, I cannot let the fact you called them "The Cardiacs" slip by! 🤣 it is just "Cardiacs". No "The...." involved. I am very sorry and please forgive me 🙏

"Yeah but.... they smash them down, really skinny, so they cook super quick... and they.... and they caramelise around the edges and... they're so crispy and the textu...." SHUT THE FUCK UP AND GIVE ME A FULL BURGER PLEASE

I've often thought this myself! Just imagine looking up from the surface of the water at these gargantuan monoliths, supporting what is essentially an industrial city, hundreds of feet in the air above you. Intense! It triggers some variant of megalophobia in me.

First 2x albums as Girl Band were ace! Seek them out! Incredible live too. Such an intense wall of noise coming from 4x lads in a standard-looking guitar, bass, drums, vox line up. If i'd heard them without seeing what they looked like, i'd have sworn they were behind banks of terrifying synths!!

Yeah, everything on your list is deserving of a top spot. I almost feel guilty that I can pick a fave because of the strength of everything he's done, but Vile Stuff just hit me in such powerful way. It changed my outlook on composition and guitar playing and music in general. It's so f#%&ing good!

Dare I ask what your favourite Dawson (Henki / Hen Ogledd included) track is? I love practically everything he's done but I find "The Vile Stuff" to be one of the greatest pieces of music EVER produced, not just amongst his catalogue, but from the whole of humankind. Stunning achievement.

He's an absolute marvel. Saw him on four tours (plus a one-off in Hebden Bridge Trades Club) and each time i've been genuinely emotional.... like, wanting to burst with happiness. Awesome performer, musician, story-teller... all that good stuff. Funny and down to earth too. Treasure this man!

My wife was between contractions. Absent-mindlessly I pointed out that I had cut a small graze into my arm on a coathanger earlier that day. Don't know WHY I chose that moment to say it but I did. Every head in the room slowly turned towards me... "Shut the fuck up. Sit down." was the general tone.

Niiiiice, loved Monolithic Undertow, quite a few of your Quietus Articles, and all the way down to the adventures of Tice and Lowe on the continent of Africa on here😁 Will happily have a nose at a Substack!

Could not agree more with this praise. I listened to nothing else for about a month when it came out, and still give it a regular spin now. Phenomenal record. Essential!

I once added a 'Hobbies' section to the article for Time, claiming "In its spare time, Time likes to pass the time by passing time as a pastime" and it was up there for a few days longer than I expected it to be.

Queuing at a cash machine once, I stepped forward and saw the previous lady had taken their card and walked off without £80 cash. I got it, ran after her shouting "You forgot to grab your money!" She snatched it out of my hand, gave me a filthy look and took off. Could have roundhouse kicked her 🤬

Oh good stuff! So we'd get to see Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan twice instead of once at the gig 🤣 Cannot argue with that at all! Hopefully can get down to it. Cheers 👍

Aye. It wasn't even a 'bad' review in any real sense to be honest. Still a fair bit of praise! The writer just likes some of your earlier gear more!! I think the record rocks 🤘 There's a "feel good" edge to it, without sacrificing any of your heaviness/fuzz/power. Thumbs up from me! 👍

Whoa! Didn't see this coming! Is this the very same Quietus once accused of accepting bribes and backhanders to place Dances/Curses at the top spot for Album of the Year 2020?? For what it's worth, i've given Heaven Was Wild a few spins and it pretty much rules. Guess the bribe money ran out eh? 🤔

I also listened to it last night, but I didn't make a shit vegi shepherd's pie. I had a bowl of night cereal. Your post reminded me to buy the album today tho. So i've just done that.

Initially thought this post was gonna be about how you haven't got your headphones to listen to music and so the sound of the cushions whacking the door ended up becoming a decent rhythmic noise track

Hurrah! If you're a meat eater, have it alongside roast pork. That's always a winner. If not, use it as the base for a chutney as you said.... Dunno why I'm offering this advice as though i've got any culinary skills, but here we are! Enjoy either way 👍
