A post featuring the following text:

"October 13 is Herpes Awareness Day

Herpes is a common skin virus that does not pose significant health risks, but can cause physical discomfort, result in lost work, & can have an emotional impact due to social stigma.

Is it useful to test for herpes?

Blood tests for herpes do NOT predict outbreaks, & are NOT useful for routine screening.

The majority of the population will test positive for herpes antibodies on a blood test.

How is herpes treated?

Herpes outbreaks are often brought on by stress or illness, & can be treated episodically or with daily suppressive medication.

Daily medication can reduce the frequency of outbreaks & reduce the risk of transmission.

New sexual health data from the University of New South Wales’ Kirby Institute shows 42,393 gonorrhea reports
& 5,986 infectious syphilis reports were recorded in 2025.

The figures represent 10-year increases of 57% & 56%, respectively.

Men accounted for the majority of cases last year, making up 73% of gonorrhea reports & 78% of infectious syphilis reports; the report suggests a significant proportion of transmission continues to occur through male-to-male sexual contact among gay & bisexual men.

Syphilis rates increased by 167% among women, compared with 39% among men.

Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Australians remain a priority group, experiencing disproportionately high STI rates.

Compared with non-Indigenous Australians, the Indigenous population is diagnosed with gonorrhea at more than 4 times the rate & syphilis at more than 6 times the rate.

"Women with menstruation-related disorders more likely to be diagnosed with STIs, study suggests

A study using the Japan Medical Data Center Claims Database, found that young women with menstruation-related disorders, (like endometriosis & dysmenorrhea), were significantly more likely to be diagnosed as having an STI than women without those conditions.

The study found that roughly 260,000 women (7.5%) had been diagnosed as having endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, or both, & that those women were 4 - 5 times more likely to be diagnosed with an STI.
- Chlamydia was identified in 3.5% of women with menstrual disorders, compared with 0.7% of women without.
- Similarly, gonorrhea was diagnosed in 0.9% of women with menstrual disorders, compared with 0.2% of those without.
- Trichomoniasis, genital herpes, & other STIs were also diagnosed between 4 - 5 times more often in women with menstrual disorders.
- Women with endometriosis had the highest STI diagnosis rates overall.

One likely explanation is that women with endometriosis & dysmenorrhea have more frequent healthcare visits.

These findings highlight the importance of STI screening & reproductive health education.

Question 2: Do Mgen tests result in false negatives 10% of the time in men, & 30% of the time in women?

To answer, let’s talk about sensitivity vs. specificity.

All tests have sensitivity & specificity.

Sensitivity is the proportion of positive test results out of all truly positive samples.
Sensitivity is the ability to correctly identify those with the disease.

Specificity measures the proportion of negative results out of all truly negative samples.
So specificity refers to the test’s ability to correctly identify those without the disease.

However, false positives are more likely to occur in individuals with a lower bacterial load, & while we don’t entirely know the function of bacterial load & transmission risk for Mgen, in most diseases a lower bacterial load is associated with lower risk of both transmission & symptoms.

Swipe for More

Question 3: What is your justification for recommending Mgen urine/genital testing, considering the points you made about antibiotics resistance?

The decision was made based on community interest combined with the unique obligations of occupational health that lead us towards making a policy, & the increase in the availability of testing & treatment that made us feel comfortable enough with implementing it.

Our Steps:
1. We received requests to do something about Mgen, & after conducting research we decided to take action.
2. Escalation efforts started with an educational campaign, which then moved to an optional screening program with a specific provider.
3. In 2023, a non-PASS partner testing facility began offering Mgen tests & publishing incidence data.
4. The high incidence rates created panic & discourse within the industry. We needed to address the problem of people’s concern; both because we wanted to quell their fears, but also because part of our job is to help mitigate legal risk. Now that this was regularly being tested for in a significant subset of the industry, production needed to be protected from the risk of transmission.

Swipe for More

Considerations:
- Public health authorities do not recommend regular screening or treatment of asymptomatic sexual partners.
- This is something that can be managed in a personal sexual context as it is much simpler to control your sexual network, but would require a robust health surveillance program in order to pull off for the industry (PASS, or another central authority, would need to be keeping track of who was having sex with who, evaluating exposure timelines, & testing & treating all potential exposures).

HIV Comparisons: Incidence is incredibly rare (someone in the industry tests positive for HIV less than once a year), transmission is even more rare (we have never had an HIV transmission on a PASS regulated set), & we can get the industry to comply with our stop work requests & answer our questions because the risk associated with HIV is so high.

Final Conclusion: We knew in making the decision was going to create a lot of fringe cases that would have to be troubleshot individually, & that getting people into appropriate treatment would be essential - but felt more confident in this path because of the published clinical treatment guidance from the CDC that we could direct clinicians to.

Swipe for More

Question 4: What about Ureaplasma?

In the case of Ureaplasma, there are no treatment guidelines - even if Ureaplasma had the same research & testing availability behind it as Mgen does, the lack of ability to direct clinicians to something would require us to find a different approach.

Question 5: If, in fact, treatment of asymptomatic cases is required to stop them spreading & becoming symptomatic cases, as we are a 'high risk' population in this industry, is there evidence that this works?

The data we have (albeit limited) shows a decrease in incidence after changes in screening policy for Mgen. However, the test data does not differentiate between symptomatic & asymptomatic cases & we cannot speak to whether our screening guidance has had any effect on them.

(1/2) You asked - We answered! ✅ Check out our latest recap on Mgen. Read the full summary: www.passcertified.org/news/pass-of...

During PASS’s Office Hours on July 7, 2026, the PASS Team, along with a number of passionate industry workers, discussed Mycoplasma Genitalium (Mgen) testing, treatment, antibiotic resistance, & more.

In this summary, we have included the most relevant answers to questions brought up in the meeting.

Thank you to everyone involved in the discussion, especially in regards to complex subjects, such as Mgen.

Question 1: What type of test is the Mgen test, & I was under the impression they were not approved by the FDA (only NAAT)?

PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test is a type of NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Test), & for ease we tend to use them interchangeably since more people are familiar with PCR testing due to COVID. The Mgen test is a TMA (Transcription-Mediated Amplification) test - there are key differences, but the technology is similar enough to lay people.

A study led by the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney included an analysis of data from over 2,100 bi+ Australians, & found the following:

Cis bi+ women had higher levels of engagement with health care, but also higher rates of illicit drug use, sexual violence perpetrated against them, & STI diagnoses.

Trans & non-binary/gender diverse bi+ participants tended to feel more included in & engaged with LGBTQ+ communities, but also reported higher rates of sexual violence perpetrated against them, & poor mental health.

Cis bi+ men were half as likely to have had sexual violence perpetrated against them compared with bi+ people of other genders in the study, but their reported experiences were still over 5 times higher than in the general male population.

Cis bi+ men were less likely to be connected to LGBTQ+ community & sexual health care in general.

28% of bi+ participants met the threshold for probable serious psychological distress, more than double the rate in the general Australian population (17%). Rates were even higher among trans & non‑binary bi+ people.

"Syphilis cases are spiking in several CA counties

As of 2024, congenital syphilis has increased for 12 straight years.

It has reached its highest point since 1994.

To decrease the rates of infection, it is recommended that:
Health care providers screen everyone between the ages of 15 & 44 in areas with a high rate of the disease.
Testing should be repeated during pregnancy in counties with the highest rates.

In California:
Fresno County recorded the highest syphilis rate among the state’s most populated counties, with 30.4 cases per 100,000 women ages 15 - 44.
Sacramento county followed in 2nd with 24.6 cases cases.
Los Angeles reported a rate of 12.9.
Santa Clara had the lowest rate at 3.9.

Syphilis is caused by bacteria, & symptoms vary depending on what stage the infection is in.

Ulcers may develop & your body may clear them, but without antibiotics, your body won’t be able to cure the disease.

This is the 1st time that zero cervical-cancer death has been recorded for this age group.

There were some deaths among women aged 25 - 29, but far fewer than would be expected.

It’s estimated around 200 lives have already been saved.

A recent study published in The Lancet provides evidence that this decline can be attributed to uptake of the HPV vaccine.

It has been established that the HPV vaccine greatly reduces infections & cases of cervical cancer, & now we have the 1st evidence it prevents deaths too.

It should also protect against warts on the skin & genital & anal areas in both sexes.

Sexually transmitted diarrhea spreading rapidly among gay men in UK

A new study from the University of Cambridge has found that variants of Shigella, which can cause bloody or prolonged diarrhea, are causing more disease and growing more antibiotic-resistant.

Sexually transmitted forms of Shigella usually come from direct or indirect contact between the mouth and anus.

Between 2015 and 2020, sexually transmitted forms of Shigella rose 15% faster annually than variants transmitted through other means like travel or food.

- More than 70% of the sexually transmitted strains of Shigella resisted at least 1 relevant antibiotic.
- 1/3 of patients who contract sexually transmitted Shigella end up in the hospital, for an average of 4 - 5 days.
- Up to 2/3 of GBMSM (men who have sex with men) with Shigella are also found to have other STIs, including HIV.

Public health management of this issue is failing, as the advice for dealing with Shigella has been handwashing and food hygiene, which does not address how to prevent the sexual transmission of it.

Senior author of the study Professor Kate Baker stated “Sexually transmissible shigellosis needs to be treated as a distinct public health threat, requiring different surveillance, prevention, and treatment strategies.”

Chlamydia is the most common treatable STI, but:

A post featuring a photo of a person holding their abdomen, which is highlighted to look irritated, & features the following text:

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

UC is an inflammatory bowel disease in which the inner lining of the large intestine & rectum become inflamed.

Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal pain, & blood in your stools.

An estimated 65% of people with UC experience some type of sexual dysfunction, whether it be physical or psychological.

Sexual dysfunction is more common in women.

Many UC symptoms that can make sex difficult are treatable, medication that can impact sex may be adjusted, & you can get a referral for therapy to help with anxiety & depression.

Although it may be difficult to have conversations about sex with your physician, these conversations are important to have because staying silent serves no one.

2 ways to start this dialogue include:
- Talking about symptoms that interfere with your sex life.
- Talking about sex as it relates to fertility.

Speak with your healthcare provider about these issues to improve your health & quality of life.

Know Your Rights: Safety & The World Cup ✅ Read full blog post & access resources: www.passcertified.org/news/safety-...

In August 2025, The Department of Homeland security held a 3 day human trafficking training workshop with law enforcement & hospitality workers in preparation for the Super Bowl. The signs in every airport bathroom or hotel lobby multiply prior to every major sporting event. The belief that sporting events are hubs of human trafficking has been debunked by academics & oftentimes harm trafficking victims.

As the World Cup approaches, hosted across Canada, Mexico, & 11 major cities in the United States, it’s important to be aware of potential stings & your rights.

The New York Post reported that New York based escorts were receiving an increase in bookings. It’s important to remember that these organizations are not your friends, & while the temporary bump in engagement may benefit you financially, it puts you & other sex workers at risk. Although your phone is protected under your Fifth Amendment rights, police frequently disregard this & have forced individuals to unlock their phones.

Tip #1: Be aware of your digital footprint.
Use a VPN, proton, or alternative browser (Duck Duck Go). Consider using a separate phone for business purposes.

Tip #2: Know Your Rights:
Sex Workers Project at the Urban Justice Center provided an outline of your rights upon arrest: https://sexworkersproject.org/downloads/2012/2012-know-your-rights.pdf

Tip #3: Contact Local or National Sex Worker Organizations for help in case of arrest

"Important Mgen (Mycoplasma Genitalium) Update

We have recently become aware that some individuals are taking only the 1st week of treatment, without completing the 2nd antibiotic.

This can lead to:
- Treatment failure
- Antibiotic resistance
- Ongoing transmission
- The need for additional treatment
- Time away from work

It is essential to take ALL prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed & complete the entire course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve or you receive a negative test result before treatment is finished.

"Elderly people are more sexually active than most people think

Licensed psychologist Sidsel Louise Schaller, conducted in-depth interviews with 32 people aged between 65 & 85 in order to explore older adults’ relationships to their own sexuality.

According to her research, older people are rarely asked about their sex lives, & that both healthcare professionals & younger people tend to assume that the older generation does not engage in sex.

Another finding of this study is that sex education is needed both in youth & later in life, especially when it comes to doctors not doing their job properly, specifically when they do not tell their older patients about the side effects that certain medications can have on sexuality.

Sexuality is varied in older people, with some using sex to combat loneliness, others who use toys & medication, & some not interested in having sex at all for various reasons.

Older people should not feel any pressure to be sexually active in order to be seen as successful, & even if they are not sexually active, they can still have a sexuality that lives within them.

A post featuring 2 men embracing.

"A new strain of Shigella is disproportionately impacting queer men. Why?

What is Shigella?

Shigella is an increasingly common bacterial infection that can spread through feces, usually via water contamination, unwashed hands, & certain types of sexual contact (esp. anus to mouth AKA rimming).

A new strain with extensive drug resistance has been reported & the population being disproportionately affected is men who have sex with men. However, most cases don’t require treatment with antibiotics unless severe.

After someone receives treatment for Shigella, they can remain contagious for a few weeks, despite no longer have symptoms.

Recommendations to reduce the risk of transmission include:
- Not having sex with someone who has diarrhea.
- Not bottoming or getting rimmed by someone who has stomach issues or was recently treated.
- If topping, washing off your penis thoroughly before putting it in another person's mouth or anus.

Today is National Hepatitis Testing Day! To learn more about hepatitis, vaccines, & other STIs, visit: passcertified.org/resources-ov...

A post featuring a gloved hand holding 2 blood samples, & includes the following text:

"May 19th is National Hepatitis Testing Day

The industry standard PASS Panel for 14-day work clearance requires 9 tests for 7 STIs, including hepatitis B & hepatitis C.

What are the risks associated with these pathogens?
Hep B is a short-term illness, but long-term chronic hepatitis B can cause cirrhosis (liver scarring), liver cancer, liver failure, & premature death.

Similarly, Hep C is a viral infection that affects the liver. If left untreated it can cause significant liver damage, & even death.

Is there a way to reduce the risk of transmission?

Any fluid transfer involving saliva, semen, &/or blood can provide for transmission, so it is important to follow sterilization protocols for surfaces, implements, & toys to avoid transmission.

Getting vaccinated against hep A & hep B can help protect against transmission.

There is currently no vaccine for hep C.

"Babeland & Bedsider Partner to Address Rising Sexual Health Misinformation Online

Based on Power to Decide's 2025 Youth Reproductive Health Survey:
- Over 20% of young people report getting birth control information from social media
- Respondents answered only 5 out of 11 questions correctly on common contraception myths
- 1 in 3 say they don’t have enough information to choose a birth control method

Despite online access, knowledge gaps persist across sexual
health topics like contraception & STI awareness.

Misinformation around STIs can have serious public health consequences, such as the spread of common asymptomatic infections like Chlamydia & Gonorrhea, due to the lack of regular testing, or how undetected or untreated HPV infections can lead to long-term health problems.

The Babeland & Bedsider partnership seeks to develop a digital awareness campaign centered on medically reviewed, judgment-free education that focuses on birth control & how it extends into areas like STIs.

"4 Signs You Have a Bartholin's Cyst, Plus Treatment Options

Bartholin's cysts are fluid-filled sacs; they are common,
& can feel like a lump near your vaginal opening.

If it becomes enlarged or infected,
the following symptoms may occur:
Swelling & redness
Pain with sitting or walking
Pain with sexual intercourse
Vaginal discharge or vaginal pressure

A physician can diagnose a Bartholin's cyst with a pelvic exam; a doctor may also take a sample of the fluid to test for an STI, like gonorrhea.

For people 40 & older, a biopsy might be suggested, either to remove all or part of the cyst & may test it for cancer.

Small, uninfected Bartholin's cysts typically will not need treatment, but if they are larger or infected, treatments include draining & minor surgeries.

Before you head to Miami for XBIZ, besides lube, there’s another tube you should be packing. Sunscreen! 🧴 Here are the most common questions & misconceptions. Learn more: passcertified.org/news/sunscre...

PASS Sunscreen 101

Where should I apply sunscreen?
Apply 2 fingers worth of sunscreen to your face & neck; reapply every 2 hours.
ANY part of your body can get a sunburn, especially areas that don’t typically see the sun, particularly the popular TikTok trend of “perineum sunning.”

Types of Sunscreen
Mineral: The ingredients label will typically include “titanium dioxide” or “zinc oxide.” Although many dermatologists recommend this for people with sensitive skin, it can often leave a white cast. Mineral sunscreens work as a “shield,” creating a physical barrier between UV rays & your skin.
Chemical: The ingredients label will not include titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. Specific “filters” can vary between American, European, & Asian sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays.

What Does SPF even mean?
SPF stands for “Sun Protection Factor” which refers to how much solar energy
(UV Rays) is required to produce a sunburn on protected skin.
According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “An SPF 30 allows about 3% of UVB rays to hit your skin. An SPF of 50 allows about 2% of those rays through.”

Everybody should be using sunscreen!
But there are some circumstances where it is especially important to remember
to reapply sunscreen:
Tattoos/ Tattoo Removal: Sun exposure can cause tattoos to fade.
Laser Hair Removal: Like tattoo removal, any darkening of the skin can cause lasers to lose effectiveness.
Herpes/ Cold Sores: Heat & sun exposure can cause breakouts. It’s important to remember to keep your medications close by in case of an outbreak.

In 2003, the International Labour Organization began to observe this day in order to stress the prevention of accidents & diseases at work.

Our industry operates differently than others when it comes to health & safety, as talent‘s bodies/health are directly subjected to risk on set.

PASS acts as a self-regulatory body for adult industry workers by:

- Providing an industry-standard testing policy that includes 9 different tests for 7 STIs (+Mgen)

- Operating The PASS Database for 14-day work clearance

- Administering Production Holds when there are potential significant infection risks to performers

- Educating workers on STI prevention methods, reccommended vaccinations, & more!
