Mainly that I can't find any instances in earlier fiction (Faulkner is an early example), and that internal monologue was not widely used until the end of the 19th century. E.g., Jane Austen used free indirect speech, Poe's narrators might address the reader directly. Do you have counterexamples?

Are you sure? Using italics to mark thoughts seems to be a twentieth-century device, and there's plenty of fiction earlier than that that's still commonly read.

'State of Dogs' (1998) is a Mongolian arthouse film told from the perspective of a dead stray dog. Highly recommended! There's also 'Stray' (2020), a Turkish movie about dogs living on the street in Istanbul, but I haven't seen it. So, there's some truth to it… ?
