Trying to get back into more serious Unity development to move my industrial XR project along. It is the project idea that has the longest tail but Meta VR glasses and XReal Aura show that the required hardware is coming soon. It is also a decent SAASpocalypse hedge (I hope).

Freelance work has finished. Now I need to work out which of the gazillion half-finished projects I have started to promote to 'possible earner'. The new Meta VR glasses are tempting me to push forwards with Spatial Fusion. Working in a niche like that may be a way to avoid the SAASpocalypse.

Still alive. Touching grass, doing some freelance work and playing with some prototypes for different business ideas. Grass is itchy, I don't see what all the fuss is about to be honest.

tbh the main problem was trying to paywall something that people can get for free now - without adding enough additional value. Learned a good lesson at where the bar for retention actually is - and it is a lot higher than I realized.

Failure (to monetize) is humbling, but I have learned a hell of a lot with this project that I can apply in future ventures. Some quick lessons learned: Don't try and charge for things people can get for free Spend more time on validation than building Angular Material is evil

Well, it's been fun but I've decided to abandon any attempt to monetize dailyappidea.dev and just make everything on the site free. The new goal for the site is to just be useful (and hopefully grow traffic). #buildinpublic

Day 263 of building dailyappidea.dev I just added a free DNS name generator and lookup tool to the site. It will also help you pick a different brand name if your preferred choice is taken. #buildinpublic

There are still some ghosts of Angular Material line-of-business nastiness in the design, but hopefully it is starting to look more like a modern SAAS site.

Day 261 of building dailyappidea.dev (and other stuff) I've been switching between projects, but I've also spent some time improving the UX for this one. Along the way I added nifty cost modelling tool that you can use to model the profitability of a software venture. Its free! #buildinpublic

Currently Reading: This is book two of seven in the Sun Eater series. Somebody described the series as "The Name of the Wind" in space and that tracks so far. (except, this series actually gets finished)

One of the best things about having zero users is that I can monkey patch my production DB and nobody will ever know ;) #buildinpublic #bestpractice

Maybe the name is overloaded? I'm talking about github.github.com/spec-kit/ which wraps a formal SDD process around agent-based coding.

Good news about SpecKit - it does seem to give you much tighter control over the vibe coding process. Forcing an analyze->research->plan->implement->test loop for every feature really cuts down on rogue behavior, feature creep and back tracking. I'm liking it so far. #buildinpublic

Had a long rambling conversation with Claude designing a multi-agent ensemble with scrum like oversight and tight feature definition, and in the end was told 'Congrats, you just reinvented SpecKit' So this week's task is to learn SpecKit github.github.com/spec-kit/ Time to level up #buildinpublic

You are getting some users to come back? I'm still grinding that achievement. Probably gonna switch to B2B instead of B2C - I think it is more my vibe.

Day 250 of building dailyappidea.dev Just pushed the updated version of the site that completes the pivot to an application generation tools platform. This seems like a good place to put the project on the back burner for now and try some other ideas. #buildinpublic

I'm trying something new here - all guest users share a timed credit pool, which should limit abuse and maintain a reasonable cap on costs Members will be able to buy private credits and access more advanced versions of these tools (that is the next step)

My mistake so far has been trying to deploy finished and polished products - way past the point where the project should have been shelved. I need to reduce my idea of what 'minimum' means for an MVP.

ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 01/08/2026
For the next 12 months I hope to make more progress. I may even try the early validation thing all the cool kids are talking about. Or I might just keep hacking. Either way, I'm not giving up!

Today marks the 1-year anniversary of my journey as a solo founder. Here is what I've learned - you need a validated idea. Always validate before building - you need a distribution plan. Building stuff is easier than selling it - Getting users can be brutal. Keeping them is harder #buildinpublic

I just wanted to say thanks for being open about the difference between MRR and profit - so many Founders out there making MRR sound like money in the bank! ( I have 0 MRR, but at least my costs are low)

Yes, you write the test for the requirement and test vertically across your whole stack at once (from the outside in) rather than building up your code in tested layers from the inside out. TDD is still great for complex logic, but most apps are just glueing frameworks together and don't need it.
110
ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I'm oscillating between 'keep tweaking it until it works' and 'give up, move on'. This was always meant to be a learning project, but I'd still like to see it turn a profit. I'm probably going to give it one more sprint then put this site on the back burner for a while.
110
ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I've always preferred BDD to TDD. Test across all layers from the outside in using business requirements as your specs, instead of accumulating nested layers of unit tests. You typically end up with a lot less test code to maintain for the same coverage

ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 28/07/2026

Day 240 of building dailyappidea.dev Removed all paywalls. Free members now get access to _everything_ as part of the pivot to a future PAYG model. The public site also now gives access to the previous week of ideas and validations. #buildinpublic

probably fair to say that posting was driving the bulk of traffic, but that's to be expected without any other marketing channel. The key realization is that retention/engagement is non-existent which is something that only rework will change.
010
ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Another issue is that the SAAS gold rush has mainly played out. Almost all the horizontal opportunities now have entrenched incumbents. You either need to be able to disrupt one of the big players, parasite/value add one of them,or come up with a defensible niche idea for a smaller market.
110
ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
Building was only ever one facet of the problem. Validation and distribution are still just as difficult - and with vibe coded apps flooding the market, distribution is getting even harder than it used to be.

Unity's 2D tile system is pretty painful to work with, I can see the advantages of going for something more lightweight.

ParsecXR @parsecxr.bsky.social · 26/07/2026
The choice between continuing chasing what feels like a sunk cost and moving on to something else is a difficult one. My gut feel is that iterating to turn things around will be a good learning opportunity, but I can't be tweaking this thing forever. I have so many other ideas I want to pursue.

Day 238 of building dailyappidea.dev Took some time off for a family vacation and came back to flatlined analytics, but got some good feedback of some things to change. Working on revamping the site now. If this change doesn't move the needle I'll have to pivot to other ideas. #buildinpublic

This was an enhancement applied to this raw pitch "A SAAS directory that surfaces ongoing promotional deals to end-users. Most SAAS directories are used by other founders. This directory would attempt to build and end-user base as a differentiating factor"

About a year ago, someone asked me to make an IOS Todo app that supported recurring tasks and reminders, but which didn't require a subscription or a vendor account. I'm not fast but I get there eventually Fingers crossed for App Store app #2 #buildinpublic #indiedev

Distribution is definitely the dragon in the room. At the moment I am working on V1.5 of dailyappidea.dev - adding an agentic validation loop that people can use to validate and enhance their app ideas. I have a few other projects I am working on. One day one of them might actually make money!

Day 217 of building DailyAppIdea.dev Still working on adding an iterative LLM validation tool. Its 80% done, so obviously I still have 4/5ths of the work still to do. Today's idea highlights that the site is biased towards 'socially useful' as well as 'profitable' ideas: #buildinpublic

The question is do I chase the sunk cost, or move on to something else? The answer is probably to add V2.0 of the site to all of the other plates that I am spinning. At least I'm not going to be bored.
