Every community shouldn't have to rediscover parking reform from scratch. PRN connects local reformers with research, examples, tools + people who have already done the work. Help build the network, join today! parkingreform.org/join/

A parking rule can decide whether a project works. More required parking can mean more land, higher costs, fewer homes, or no project at all. Parking requirements aren't just transportation policy. They're development policy too. Learn more at parkingreform.org
Graphic arguing parking rules shape project feasibility: side‑by‑side comparison shows "without mandate" a compact infill building fitting a corner lot, while "with large parking requirement" the site becomes a surface parking lot with a smaller building; includes call-to-action parkingreform.org.

Removing parking minimums is not the end of parking policy. Busy places still need loading, accessible spaces, permits, pricing + curb management. The goal isn't “no rules.” It is less mandate and better management.
Graphic advocating fewer parking mandates and smarter curb management: bold headline "Less mandate. Better management." over a busy shopping-center parking lot; left panel reads "Old approach — Require more parking." right panel lists "Better questions" about demand, access, curb use, and existing

One of the best arguments for reform: “Another city already did it.” Good policy spreads faster when communities can learn from places that went first. PRN’s Parking Reform Map helps find the precedent: parkingreform.org/resources/ma...

A bigger movement needs a bigger network. Housing, transportation, small business, climate + public space all intersect with parking policy. PRN helps connect those conversations, and the local reformers doing the work. Join us: parkingreform.org/join/

Last week PRN helped bring parking reform into Climate Week conversations about housing, transit, infill, public space, climate + emerging mobility. That was the goal. Parking policy belongs in the bigger conversation about building better cities.

This week was a reminder: parking reform belongs in bigger conversations. Housing. Climate. Transit. Public space. Small business. Emerging mobility. PRN helped bring those conversations together at Climate Week, and built relationships that can move the work further.

Today UCS turns to housing + climate: infill, electrification, growth in the Global South, and the case for climate-aligned abundance. PRN is co-hosting all four sessions, putting parking and land-use reform inside the broader climate and housing conversation.

A parking shortage isn't always a parking-supply problem. Shared parking, pricing, permits, loading, wayfinding, and better information can make existing spaces work harder. Before building more, ask how well we're managing what we have.

Parking requirements can make a small project much bigger than it needs to be. More land. More pavement. More cost. Parking rules don't just decide where cars go. They can decide whether a project works at all. Learn more at parkingreform.org

The curb has more than one customer. Parking, deliveries, accessible access, buses, bikes, pickups, trees, and public space all compete for limited curb space. The curb is infrastructure. Cities should manage it like infrastructure.

Better parking does not mean more parking. Sometimes the answer is better management, pricing, permits, shared parking, and smarter use of the spaces we already have. Parking reform is about making parking policy work better. Learn more about practical parking reform at parkingreform.org

Removing an outdated parking mandate is a win. But what happens next may be even more interesting. Projects get more flexibility. Older buildings become easier to reuse. Cities learn what people actually build when the mandate is gone. Have a parking reform story we should know about?

Removing a parking minimum does not remove parking. It removes the mandate. Different homes, businesses, and neighborhoods have different needs. Parking reform gives people more flexibility to respond to the place they actually have. More flexibility. Better choices. Fewer unnecessary barriers.

You don't have to be a parking expert to change parking policy. Most reformers start by noticing something in their community that doesn't make sense and asking better questions. PRN gives people the tools and network to turn those questions into action. Join the movement. parkingreform.org/join/

The curb is not leftover space. It is some of the most valuable public land in a city. Parking, loading, buses, bike lanes, scooters, trees, deliveries, accessible spaces, and public life are all competing for the same curb. Parking reform is how cities start managing that space honestly.

Myth: Parking minimums just make sure there is “enough parking.” Reality: Required parking is never free. It shows up in higher rents, higher construction costs, bigger lots, longer walks, and less room for homes, shops, trees, sidewalks, and public life.

Parking reform is not only a housing issue. It is also a small business issue, a main street issue, a climate issue, a conservation issue, a transportation issue, and a better-neighborhoods issue. The broader the coalition, the more reforms become possible.

Myth: Every new business needs lots of off-street parking. Reality: Parking mandates often block the small, local businesses people say they want. A corner store should not have to act like a big box store just to be legal. That is not free parking. It is a hidden tax on local businesses.
