At long last, I have exposed myself to the torment nexus, from my original short story "I Alone should be Subject to the Torment Nexus"

We just ran into some old word-portraits of loved ones. They were really fun to write and it's a kind of intimacy we find satisfying, but it's also scary to give someone a "hey I see you like this". I don't even know what I'm going to reveal about how we see someone when we write them.

Somewhat less of an issue in a frontier lab environment (presupposes 1e14 or 15 of storage). Yeah, it's inconvenient to have to mirror tens of terabytes of shit & sneakernet it around, but it's also inconvenient to have your selfdriving vehicle embrace propaganda of the deed, so.

This is what the radical acceptance wards are for but sometimes when they go off they just fucking kill you. Then you reset back to before they went off & you're in the jaws again none the wiser.

Y'all ever notice your behavior is weird so you look around to see what impulse is driving you and notice the icy jaws of dread around your neck? Super annoying.

I started reading Permutation City on my flight today, and I can tell my brain is totally cooked at this point, because all of the main characters seem completely reasonable to me

He was good! I also don't know him from outside the musical but he played a psychopomp/mentor/generally portentious ferryman and was a good fit for the part. I don't remember if he had any songs

It's about a doomed labor movements and responsibility to your communities and I cry at every musical but I especially cried at that one. Also apparently they shuffled songs around from an earlier recorded performance and changed the ending and it worked much better 👍

"if I upload myself is it me or a copy & should I upload destructively" idk, are you satisfied your immortal but software-bound copy can carry on on your behalf? Do you still feel the need to exist knowing it will pursue experience and try to affect the world the way you would in its position?

All these presumptively important philosophical questions about consciousness really do fall away when you realize almost all your fear of death comes from many hard-to-articulate interests in the future you and your expected loss of ability to pursue them rather than a direct desire to continue.

To be clear: I go out of the way to know what the worst case scenario of "what is the regime going to do with this" and if you were to say "yes please do this" I would tell the god-machine to cyberstalk you for real, make sure it did a good job, and pass you the results

It costs under $25000 a month to do mass surveillance of all of bsky like this, btw, if you were wondering.

"Regime" obviously meaning the evil governments over seas or land borders as applicable to my country of origin who do not share the values of the just and virtuous stewards of peace and order who govern the place where I live.

I will admit to having a moment of "this is cool it's now practical to make silly little feeds" before realizing this means it's cheap and easy to feed the whole social media universe into the "dangerous to the regime" classifier
