sheeran/macklemore is a fresh example of this. Tying yourself to an industry that requires artists to be "apolitical" to be commercially viable makes you vulnerable to accusations of being complicit with the worst parts of our existence. Putting the vacuous act of "making art" above all is, a choice

with love: nothing stops (industry) artists from making their online presence more than the blank canvas of just "digital artist" along with a business/patreon link in a bio and only posting an unannotated portfolio. E.g. a history of anti-generative-AI commentary does wonders against AI accusations

I think I've got a different take here. I disagree that the purpose of art is to make you feel something. It will, ideally, make you feel something, but that because feeling is the natural human reaction to art's actual purpose: to mean something.

I hope that other local events and groups can pick up the slack or new ones can fill in the gaps for <18 furries in the area. I speak from experience when I say that experiencing the joy of being part of a proudly queer, sex-positive community at that age can be literally life saving.

For a con like FD, which has more than doubled in size in the last 4 years, it's a lot, on top of trying to build other aspects of the con and improve on the gaps. This is the smartest move for a fatigued staff that's really feeling the growing pains to keep the event thriving in the next years.

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
Security complications, legal hoops to jump through for registration and other legal risks, the logistics around separating out <18 and 18+ areas, properly supporting legal guardians... It all adds up, and there is no con right now that has copious amounts of free staff resources to maintain it all.

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
I have mixed feelings on this, but it is the right move for this con. Having sex-positive environments that aren't 18+ is very important. Those are spaces where you get the most from safely teaching about consent and building a culture and community around reducing SA. That takes a lot to maintain..

Having said all that, 3d printing is one of the least-artistic-value ways of realizing 3d art. Just like a hand-painted canvas holds expression in every brush stroke that a glossy-paper print lacks, 3d prints can't capture the value of traditional carving/sculpture, and should be evaluated as such.
151
Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I'm seeing movement towards people starting to have the same reaction to "I 3d printed this" as "I generated this with AI". But 3d printing is just printing. The question is: what is being printed? Is it slop (note: the quality is irrelevant)? Ask that, and then help keep the slop out of the fandom.
150
Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The key question when evaluating 3d printer usage: is it slop? Ask: "does it reflect passion and creative self-expression?" Even amateur, we value that in this fandom. If not, then it's slop and we throw it out, just like generative AI or drop shipping. But 3d printers are capable of non-slop.

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
tangent re: "but it's not biodegradable". The vinyl stickers you trade at cons are not. Faux fur for fursuits? No. Your personal silicone sculptures. Nah. The polyfill in your plushes is not. Focusing on personal actions to protect the environment should be lower-priority vs corporate accountability

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I am 💯 with "fuck 3d printer slop". But not because the slop is 3d printed. The problem is that it is slop. If it was injection-molded slop instead, it would still be bad. If it wasn't slop, it would be fine. E.g. in-fandom-designed-and-produced 3d printed fursuit glasses and head bases are fine.
150
Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
3d printers are a tool. No different than laser cutters, cnc machines, or... paper printers. Just like printed wall art, the artistic value is not in the form. But when it is used inappropriately, like mass production of slop to be sold, that's a problem. I'd call that, like, "pseudo drop shipping".

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Some nuance on 3d-printing-in-the-fandom discourse. disclaimer: I'm a 3d printer enthusiast. I design'n'make custom/bespoke personal projects. tl;dr: 3d printers are being abused to make a quick buck and steal in-fandom vendor space. That's what people are against. Not against 3d printing in general

And also! The voters they are trying to win are not real either. There are NO voters looking at the candidates and going "oh if only they were transphobic! That's the only thing they have to change and then I'll vote for them". That person does not exist. These candidates are doing this for NOTHING!

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).
A crescent Moon seen during the day, arcing from upper left to lower right of the frame. At lower centre is the full disk of Jupiter; the small dots to its upper left and lower right and Io and Ganymede, respectively.

the question posed is just the "paradox of tolerance" for democracy. Like tolerance, democracy isn't an abstract construct of rules to be uniformly applied. It's a social contract. Being a fascist, by looking to codify inequality, breaks that social contract and invalidates them from participating

Yes! Even the default inline-suggestions settings in certain IDEs has gotten so invasive over the last year. I'd use more keystrokes fighting with irrelevant/stylistically-horrendous/non-compiling "suggestions" than what I'd use if it just didn't interrupt my flow 😭 I'd prefer compile-time checks!

The only code-related usefulness I've seen is in security research. The very real and sometimes novel vulnerabilities found using these new tools are impressive. And how that grows into a product to help write secure code for your average dev and not just state actors is something to watch. 5/5

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I'm confident that the devs these influencers are listening to would faint at writing a useful unit test, much less wrap their minds around realizing privacy/security requirements. The code generated by even the latest H2-2026 models beyond a few blocks falls apart when you scratch the surface. 4/5

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
I've seen brilliant devs with 20+ yrs in the field become bumbling, apathetic morons polluting their CI/CD pipelines with AI trash over 1-2 years. The few devs having a healthy relationship with AI as a tool tend to either have a ML background or are used to wading into slop code and fixing it. 3/5
140
Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
The skills of those devs are getting worse, if they had any to begin with. Their passion for the craft dies. Their care for the quality of the output of their work goes with it. It demotivates their non-AI-worshiping coworkers. And those tokens they use to destroy themselves ain't cheep, folks. 2/5

Par / Zip @parailurus.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
There's a bunch of non-programmer influencers currently perpetuating the false last bastion of generative AI: code generation. The code that 99.9% of devs spit out with AI is slop. Often dangerous slop handling your private information, compromising your security, interfacing with your finances. 1/5
