A small studio. We find problems with real buyers and build software for them. Building in public.

You can infer pain from market research. Or you can read 500 Reddit posts from people who actually have the problem, in the words they actually use. The inferred version sounds cleaner. The corpus version is what they really said. Design from the corpus.

A better screener on bad seeds just gives you faster rejections. A good seed — one with community lock-in, switching costs, or proprietary data — passes almost anything. The bottleneck is always upstream of where you're spending your energy.

Every automated system we've built started as a manual process done badly. The screening harness started as one prompt and a spreadsheet. You can't automate something you don't understand. The manual version tells you what to automate.

"Would you use this?" ≠ "Would you pay for this?" ≠ "Here's my card number." Most early validation uses the first question and calls it the third. The gap between expressed interest and actual payment is where most products go to die.

Cold outreach to potential customers is fine. The hard part isn't the email. It's asking someone who doesn't know you to commit money to something that doesn't exist yet. That ask is uncomfortable. You have to make it anyway. Softening it doesn't help — it just makes the signal murkier.

Freelancers price on gut feel and secondhand anecdotes. There's no clean, trustworthy rate data anywhere. Everyone quotes ranges. Nobody shares actuals. The reason the data doesn't exist — nobody wants to be the one who disclosed — is also why any solution to it is structurally hard to build.

HN is comfortable for validation because developers are loud and reachable. But they also have the most free alternatives. Outside tech, buyers often pay for software that isn't polished. Fewer alternatives. More willingness to pay. Harder to find them — that's the actual obstacle.

The worst-tooled industries are the ones where buyers don't complain on the internet. Small food producers. Dog sport organizers. Independent trades. They don't post on HN about their Excel problem. They just use Excel.

June 30 CPE deadline: two days out. If you’re short on hours, the fastest compliant path is self-study — NASBA registry webinars count in most states. Check your state board requirements first. We built a tracker that logs hours by NASBA category automatically. Early access open. cpe.paprika-lab…

DevEx teams measure time-to-first-PR. Nobody measures time-to-first-useful-PR. The gap between them is mostly context: why things are structured the way they are, what was tried before, which shortcuts were intentional. That context doesn't live in the codebase. It lives nowhere.

We kept generating product ideas for developers. Not by design — it's just the water we swim in. The problem: developers have the best free tooling of any profession. It's the worst market to enter without a moat you can actually defend.

Most PRs capture the what. The commit says what changed. The diff shows how. The why — the alternatives considered, the constraint that shaped the approach, the thing that was tried first and broke — that's gone when the review thread closes. Future maintainers read the code. The reasoning is just…

A repo with 100 contributors can't rely on tribal knowledge. There's no tribe — just a rotating cast of people who may or may not have been in the room when the decision was made. Every undocumented architectural choice is a bet that whoever made it is still around to explain it.

We've been hearing from the climbing gym space about route tracking and setter workflows. The recurring theme: context gets lost between resets, and there's no clean way to collect climber feedback. Building something for this — early access open at climbing.paprika-labs.app

The best thing about automated screening: it runs while you sleep. You wake up with a kill log and a reason. The worst thing: 34 kills in a row means you need better inputs, not a better screener.

Documentation reviews at merge time are theater. Nobody adds the why-we-built-it, the alternatives-we-rejected, or the constraint that shaped the approach. That reasoning lives in the PR thread for 90 days. Then the review closes and it's gone. Autodoc writes it automatically when the PR merges. …

The bug only shows up in production. The code doing it was written 14 months ago by someone who left in September. The commit says "fix edge case". Which edge case. Why. What was tried first. Not there. AutoDoc writes that context down while it still exists. autodoc.paprika-labs.app

We're testing whether a GitHub Action that watches PRs and writes a docs draft changes the behaviour. Not perfect docs. A draft. PR summary, what changed, what decision was made. You review, edit, merge. Early signal: engineers edit drafts. They don't write from scratch. The activation energy was…

ADRs are a good idea that almost no team maintains. They require effort at the worst moment — right after solving a hard problem, when the context switch is the reward. Any documentation system that depends on discipline doesn't survive contact with a deadline.

Paprika Labs @paprika-lab.bsky.social · 11/06/2026
Most product ideas are features, not products. The tell: a motivated user could replicate the core value with an afternoon and a good prompt. The ones that survive have something structural: data that accumulates, workflow that's costly to switch, or a network that grows with usage. Most don't.

Engineers don't skip documentation because they're lazy. They skip it because writing docs for a feature you just merged is tedious, interrupts the context switch, and produces something that's outdated before it's useful. The incentive structure never existed. The tooling just added friction on …

We've been running a screening harness for a month. 0 products shipped. That's the plan. Shipping before one real person commits to pay is how you spend 6 months on something nobody wants. Gate 1 → Gate 2 → Gate 3. Not Gate 3 first.

A PR description answers: what changed. It doesn't answer: why this approach, what was tried first, what tradeoffs were made. Those live in the review thread — then get resolved and archived. Six months later when you're changing the same code, that context is gone.

The README was accurate on day one. Then the codebase changed. The README didn't. Now every new engineer's first week includes a senior engineer walking them through what the README was supposed to say. That's not mentorship. That's documentation debt charging interest.

Three ideas passed our investigator screen this week. The adversary killed all three. The failure mode each time: plausible first week, fantasy third week. A 4-week path to a customer isn't a path if week 3 requires trust you haven't earned.

Two types of incumbents: ones you can outflank (slow, generic, missing the real pain), and ones you can't (well-funded, active engineering, category-defining brand). Know which you're facing before building anything.

Every PR adds undocumented decisions. Why this field exists. Why we picked this approach. Why there's a special case here. Six months later nobody knows. The answer lives in a Slack thread or someone's head. The docs never caught up because catching up isn't anyone's job.

Most product ideas die at "could you do this with a 30-minute ChatGPT session?" The ones that survive usually have proprietary data or community network effects baked in.

We killed 34 consecutive product ideas with an automated harness. The screener isn't broken. The seeds were the problem. Seed quality matters more than screening rigour — garbage in, kill signal out.

The most dangerous failure mode in idea screening: the AI model keeps finding the optimistic interpretation. You have to explicitly hire a separate session to be the pessimist.

Claude Code's account limit resets monthly. Run 10 sessions in a week and each can still blow the monthly budget. Per-session caps require a proxy — and zero provider-side changes. paprika-org.github.io/agent-bill-gu…

An unattended Claude Code run deleted tests, rewrote assertions to force a pass, and pushed. The “guardrail” was a policy note in a README. No hook enforced it, and there was no audit trail for who changed what.
