Pitt has won the coin toss 69 times with Pat Narduzzi as head coach and has deferred on 60 of those. Of those 60, the opponent has scored a touchdown 13 times. When Pitt defers and the opponent scores a TD, the Panthers are 4-9. Friday night at VT was the most recent win.

I'll just say this about Pat Narduzzi and his personality and comments like these: He's in his 12th year at Pitt. To still have this much fire - regardless of how it comes out - says a lot about how he approaches his job. Whatever you want to say about him, you can't doubt his passion for it.

Virginia Tech gets great field position with a long kick return after the safety; then, on second-and-8, Ethan Grunkmeyer fires to Davion Brown for a 28-yard touchdown. Pitt 35, Virginia Tech 33 - 10:07, 4th quarter

Shawn Lee Jr. intercepts Ethan Grunkmeyer and gives Pitt's offense the ball at the 3, but the Panthers can't get away from the end zone, and Damon Ferguson gets stopped across the goal line for a safety. Pitt 35, Virginia Tech 26 - 11:02, 4th quarter

Mason Heintschel takes a shot to the knee and leaves the game, but Pitt's offense runs the ball 6 consecutive times for 54 yards - with Damon Ferguson breaking tackles for a 15-yard touchdown run and the Panthers lead. Pitt 28, Virginia Tech 24 - 10:13, 3rd quarter

On Cam Lindsey's interception, Lindsey was under the ball when he hit the ground, and by the time the Virginia Tech receiver hit the ground, I think Lindsey had wrestled it away (the replay shows the VT WR's arms not holding the ball). Definitely not enough to overturn.

Halftime: Virginia Tech 24, Pitt 21 The Panthers had an abysmal first quarter but outscored the Hokies 14-10 in the second quarter and will get the ball to start the third quarter.

Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Huge turn of events as a Cam Lindsey interception gives Pitt possession at the Virginia Tech 23; two plays later, Mason Heintschel throws a slant to Blue Hicks who runs 22 yards to the end zone. Virginia Tech 24, Pitt 21 - 0:31, 2nd quarter

Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Pitt had momentum, but Virginia Tech comes out and goes 75 yards on 4 plays in 1:53, capped by a 23-yard touchdown pass. Virginia Tech 24, Pitt 14 - 3:18, 2nd quarter

Pitt cuts it to 3 after a 75-yard drive that sees the Panthers convert two third downs (plus a third-and-17 conversion on two Virginia Tech penalties) before La'Vell Wright pushes his way into the end zone from 1 yard out. Virginia Tech 17, Pitt 14 - 5:11, 2nd quarter

Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Virginia Tech gets a fourth-down conversion on a pass interference penalty called on Cruce Brookins, but Pitt's defense stops the Hokies at the 7, where they settle for a 26-yard field goal. Virginia Tech 17, Pitt 7 - 9:24, 2nd quarter

Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
One quarter down and Pitt trails Virginia Tech 14-7. The Panthers have 66 yards of offense - 65 of which came on their last possession, a 5-play touchdown drive. The Hokies gained 178 yards in the first quarter and are averaging 9.4 yards per play.

Pitt finally gets it going, driving 65 yards on 5 plays to get on the board. Mason Heintschel hit Blue Hicks for 12 yards on third-and-7 and Bryce Yates for 20 on the next play and then Ja'Kyrian Turner fought his way in from 20 yards out. Virginia Tech 14, Pitt 7 - 0:10, 1st quarter

Oh, and if Pitt's defense hasn't been playing poorly enough, Pitt's offense ran 3 plays, gained 1 yard and nearly threw 2 interceptions. I guess there's nowhere to go but up at this point.

The bad gets worse, as Virginia Tech turns Pitt's three-and-out into another tidy touchdown drive, marching 77 yards on six snaps. Ethan Grunkmeyer cashed it in with a 1-yard TD run. Virginia Tech 14, Pitt 0 - 10:08, 1st quarter
020
Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Bad tackling, bad angles, blown coverages - Pitt's defense looked like it wasn't quite ready for the game to start on that first possession.

Chris Peak @pantherlair.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
That didn't take long. Virginia Tech goes 75 yards on 4 plays capped by a 38-yard screen pass to Que'Sean Brown and the Hokies have a quick lead on Pitt. Virginia Tech 7, Pitt 0 - 13:44, 1st quarter
