Some of my many cats, 2 sets of siblings. All wonderful. Albedo & Sparky and Tenzing and Munday. Check alt text for details. Al loved lying under the tree and looking at the lights. He was all the other cats’ favorite cat. Sparky was a box/bag fiend. Munday could weigh 80lbs if you needed her moved

Munday, Tenzing’s sister, a solid blue shorthair. She is lying on top of a pillow next to a window in the tea-cozy pose (front legs tucked under) facing the camera. She was the smallest cat I’ve ever had—never more than 6 lbs with rocks in her pockets, but she took no guff from anyone. The only other cat she liked was Albedo (everyone liked Al) at least partly because he was warm and soft and nice to sleep on.

So, there I was scrolling thru my mail when I saw THIS. And immediately wrote THAT. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

My letter to Writer’s Digest excoriating them for offering ChatGPT to the very people OpenAI stole intellectual property from to train this subpar program, and who are now suing OpenAI for proper recompense, AND who may be replaced at some point by this below-mediocre program which COULD NOT EXIST without stealing the product of writers’ human creativity.

The letter goes on to remind them of AI’s other problems including worker exploitation in the poorest places on earth, expanding humanity’s carbon footprint and out-of-control water usage.

I end by suggesting WD withdraw the product, apologize to its readers, contribute to the legal funds of those suing for copyright infringement, and fire those responsible for promoting this nonsense. Then I recommend 2 books (written by real people!!): Empire of AI and The AI Con.

This is who we are now to people outside the country. It’s not just “policies” or “trouble at customs” or even fear of deportation. It’s US, the people of America. No, #NotAllAmeticans , but enough. Enough tires slashed, windows smashed, snide remarks, refusals of service, online threats. It’s us.

This is the text of a NYT comment on an article about falling tourism figures in the US. The gist of the comment is that what’s keepin the writer from coming to the US isn’t just the Trump Admin’s policies but also the possibility of unpleasant interactions with citizens who voted for him.

I’ll start: This is my favorite outhouse. It belongs to a friend of mine and is on Pearse Island—a little island in the Johstone Strait off the coast of BC. He has a little cabin there. He’s a whaleologist.
