In 1612, Ben Jonson took a job as tutor to Sir Walter Raleigh's son in Paris; the kid would get him "dead drunk" and roll him down the streets sprawled in a wheelbarrow, declaring he "was a more lively image of the Crucifix than any they had". So, best wishes to all teachers this week.

One of the residents in Covent Garden in 1635 was named John Moongarden which is just an objectively wonderful name.

This is Sir Francis Verney's idea of flattering poetry, from a poem to the earl of Salisbury (1605): "Men are prone mightie Lords to flatter / Yet wish their heads served in a platter". Not surprisingly, Verney gave up on poetry and playwriting and instead became a pirate on the Barbary coast.

My latest publication is out in Early Theatre: new evidence about a specific playgoer in early modern Worcester (UK)--and not just any other playgoer but one of the rarest kinds to appear in the historical record by name: a middle-class woman. earlytheatre.org/earlytheatre...

In Great Haste to See a Play: A Woman Playgoer in Jacobean Worcester | Early Theatre
This note transcribes a letter written by Mary Ingram of Worcester sometime between 1607 and 1614, in which she describes going to see a play. The note provides some context about Mary, and her sister to whom she sent the letter, and what performance she might have gone to see, and what her letter reveals about early modern women as playgoers in the provinces.

A letter from Jacques De Coucy in Boulogne to Lord Lisle, the English lord deputy of Calais, sent on October 18, 1534, translated from French: "I send you a boar's head. I am sorry I have not got the rest to go with it." That's it. The whole letter.
