Finished this fireplace feature wall just before Thanksgiving. Ipè sanded to 500 with just a little renaissance wax to finish.

My friend recently asked me to create a sign for his cabin. I think this take is a nice revision on the #northwoods tradition. Ambrosia maple. The house is enameled with a spar urethane finish. Jatoba frame and some solar lights will keep the see-thru windows illuminated at night. #upnorth

Custom set of hand plane hangers with a matching block plane pouch. 10 oz harness leather, 1mm ritza tiger thread in black on 6mm spacing. Bought a 1910s Stanley No. 8 to restore and the tote was this weird yellow color and the finish was worn off. I figured it was a replacement. But after sanding, I was shocked to find this rosewood underneath. It sanded like oxidation, not a stain or finish. Anyone ever seen something like this?

1910s Stanley Hand plane handle or tote, heavily used, broken on top, and oxidized. It’s sitting on top of a woodworking bench and is the Before picture in the series of this post.

Stanley tool co number 8 handle or tote or their largest plane. Sanded to 320 and waxed. The After picture in the series is similarly situated on a workbench surface.

Not everything turns out as you envision. This experiment was supposed to be Midcentury/Atomic pattern with brass and steel inlay into walnut. I thought it would be a good study piece for a distinctively-framed wall art but it didn’t stand out. 🤷‍♂️ On to the next one… #woodworking #midcentury #retro

Starburst and Midcentury modern boomerang pattern engraved into a panel of walnut and inlaid with brass and steel. A simple pattern, it was designed as a possible piece of hung art, but the dullness of the metal and the muddy walnut didn’t draw sufficient contrast to justify further development of the idea.

Pretty minimal restoration aside from structural stuff. Clients were fine with it continuing to show its age and wear. Brushed about 5 coats of amber shellac from flake. #woodworking #antiques #restoration #finishing
