He still vividly recalled the day they met, when he went by the name Carus, an IPC employee who had been swiftly climbing the ranks of promotion under Jade's tutelage. He had read a dossier on him beforehand to learn who his business partner was: a survivor of the Second Katica-Avgin Extinction Event, sold as a slave and brought into the IPC after he killed his owner, the previous Aventurine.

He vividly recalled that they would be assigned to a mission together, as the last test to earn a position as one of the Ten Stonehearts. It was a fairly simple test, one that would benefit the IPC as a whole and the Intelligensia Guild specifically: a company that had been particularly tight-lipped on particularly valuable knowledge that could benefit in the field of medicine, and Carus had been tasked with negotiating an investment that would bring them into the IPC's fold and allow for the distribution of that knowledge. Ratio had been assigned to join him, as his own pursuit of knowledge would be great leverage.

He vividly recalled their first meeting, when that cold iron revolver was shoved into his hand, loaded with a single bullet. He vividly recalled Carus pulling the barrel towards himself, pressing it against his heart and forcing Ratio to squeeze the trigger once, twice, thrice. Three empty clicks, and that unwavering smirk.

"Life is a big gamble...and I'm always the final victor."

He stared at the white-haired boy, frozen in place, save a hand clutching his chest against the lingering pain--and the uncontrollable shaking of the cold and shock that wracked his tiny frame. It wasn't as cold as the sea, but there was an uncomfortable chill settling into his bones and freezing him from the inside out.

After a few moments, the other boy offered a hand to him. "Hey, it's okay," he said, tone gentle, as though speaking to a frightened animal. "You're okay, you're safe here."

...safe...?

He didn't know what it meant to be "safe". His entire life was spent fighting death itself, after all. Even the brief reprieves of death were treacherous, as he could still be lured ever deeper and be unable to return if his will to live faltered. He didn't know what safety felt like, and all of this felt like a trap to him. He stared at the boy for several seconds, then at his hand, then back at his face.

Sunday sets down the brush on the vanity, takes a moment to admire his work. "There, as soft as silk and as radiant as spun gold. You look as dazzling as the stars themselves. What do you think?"

In his reflection, he only sees a doll.

An unmoving doll, with two-toned glass eyes, with shoulder-length golden hair, with a flowing gown in white and blue and gold that Sunday had dressed him in, leaving his ball-jointed arms exposed to trace gloved fingertips along when he grows restless.

How long has he been trapped? His body in the waking world has long perished, the shock of the Emanator's final attack too much for him to endure. He exists as little more than a phantom, trapped within the gilded cage of Penacony, doomed to eternity as Sunday's plaything.

He can no longer move of his own volition. He can no longer speak. A beautiful doll that Sunday can play with as much as he likes, and he cannot fight back.

...and yet, there is no cruelty to be found in this existence.

His steps echoed all too loudly in the empty streets. He couldn't move faster than a slow walk, trudging forward, taking in the sights of the massacre. They were killed swiftly, with no chance to retaliate, yet their deaths were far from painless, as their frozen expressions revealed. Their last moments were filled with unbearable agony.

A pair of Cloud Knights lay in a heap of melted armor and flesh, their glaives malformed and twisted nearly beyond recognition, only identifiable by a scrap of pale blue cloth from their uniforms. The way they crumpled, the way the melted slag of their glaives lay, hinted that they were running towards the docks...though whether to flee, or to give chase, he couldn't tell.

The barely-identifiable body of a Malefic Ape, charred black as night, crumbled and scattered into the winds at the slightest touch. The same fate befell a pair of Golden Hounds, whose remains fell apart just by the brush of his coat. A single Disciple, an alchemist, remained even marginally intact, yet he dared not approach--as sparks of golden lightning still arced across their body.

Golden leaves, shimmering and sparkling, lay strewn about the pier, as though beckoning him to follow the path before him. A single boat had been left behind, tethered with frayed rope, an invitation to come to Scalegorge Waterscape.

He accepted the invitation.

Admittedly, Phainon already had concerns about Mydeimos when he noticed that the boy barely spoke, and looked like a bundle of sticks wearing soggy clothes, but those concerns became ever more clear as he watched Mydeimos once they had gone inside.

There was an obvious reluctance in his mannerisms, staying tucked within the safety of the blanket Audata had wrapped around him to dry him off and keep him warm. He remained close to Phainon, a hand gripping the edge of his tunic, as if something would pull him away at any moment, and once they were inside, he shrunk in a little closer, avoiding the furniture as best he could.

Snowy, for his part, had taken a quick liking to Mydeimos, plastering himself to the boy’s side and attempting to shove his head under his free arm to comfort him. Thankfully Mydeimos now knew that Snowy was just as harmless as he looked, and took to petting between his ears to keep himself calm.

“I can’t even begin to imagine how you ended up here,” Audata continued to ramble, sorting through cupboards and cabinets. “And from Castrum Kremnos at that, that’s so far away!”

For the last eleven years of his life, it was a simple existence. Wake up, help his parents with chores, sit through lessons with Pythias, help tend the fields with the adults, train with his makeshift wooden sword, play in the Maze with Cyrene and the fairies, return home for dinner, and go to sleep to do it all again the next day. It was quaint, nothing flashy, nothing to write grand epics about, but it was home, and it was Phainon’s life.

Of course, such peaceful monotony only made things that much more complicated when Phainon spotted a body floating in the water not far from the docks.
