Going to have to work out how to store the exciting scent created for my research which is currently making my bag and hotel room smell a bit strange thanks to @liamrfindlay.bsky.social

Thanks to @claireturner.bsky.social for organizing a stimulating and very smelly day on the senses yesterday. Met some lovely people and enjoyed putting together my paper on alcohol and the senses in Victorian fiction and culture to get some of my thoughts together on this.

Was it this incident? One of my favourite illustrations from the period.

This is my regular reminder that I'm for hire if you want to give your staff or PGRs a facilited writing day this summer. They're is a great way to provide time and space to write in a structured and healthy way, and to spend time together in a way that builds relationships in a positive way.

Thanks to @joparsons.bsky.social and the brilliant organisers of the love and loss workshop for inviting me last week and bringing together such interesting people. It's always a treat to go to the @arnosvalecemetery.bsky.social but it was looking particularly lovely in the sunshine on Friday!
A selection of pictures of Arnos vale Cemetery in the sunshine. Lots of green trees, interesting buildings and a variety of tombstones with different speakers

My new (and first) book, The Drunkard in Victorian Fiction and Culture is out in May with @edinburghup.bsky.social. You can now pre-order which is pretty cool. Even cooler is that you can get 30% off with this flyer/code. Recommend to your university library if you think it will be of interest. 🍷

Thanks so much to @arnosvalecemetery.bsky.social for inviting me to speak about my research on spontaneous human combustion and alcohol medicine last night. It was so much fun and the cemetery was as beautiful as ever. Photo credit: @joparsons.bsky.social

A few weeks ago we found this frog in our front garden. Weeks later I am still wondering where he came from. Was he underground, left by previous owners, and made his way to the surface like a splinter? Was he just a little hidden and the wind revealed him? Is he a gift from the frog people?

An early caturday reading in bed with my two lovelies
In bed. Rosa, a tortoiseshell cat sitting on my torso, next to my kindle, trying to persuade me it isn't too early for breakfast

Had a lovely evening teaching our public course on Detective and Crime Fiction yesterday. Great discussions of 'The Law and the Lady' by Wilkie Collins to kick of our theme of 'cold cases' this year. Makes me realise how much I love teaching mature students from across Bristol. I will miss it.

Final session of my 19th C unit for my brilliant mature students tonight so thought I'd dress as a Victorian heroine to entertain them. Its been such a blast to teach these brilliant students and awaken a new love of Victorian fiction in (most of) them. Finishing with Dracula so trying Mina vibes.

Thank you so much to @lottelouisa.bsky.social for a fascinating talk on beer consumption of Central European women tourists at today's @womenandalcohol.bsky.social seminar. So interesting to hear about the manner in which these women talk about drink and drinking in their private diaries

Had a great time @bavs-uk.bsky.social last week. Not been for a long time and was really impressed by the quality of the papers and the great chats I had with so many. Thanks also to my PhD sister @jendeavour.bsky.social for getting this pic of me in action, probably laughing at one of my own jokes.

This is an amazing idea. I have two for reasons I'm not going to go into. One is my trusty old Kensington (pictured here with jazzy background in honour of your dreams) and the other a very fancy one with extra buttons someone bought me. Kensington wins every time.

Our next Think While You Drink features @philmellows.bsky.social in conversation with our fellow organiser & beer expert, Prof Sam Goodman, about his new book @beerbreaks.bsky.social at the Famous Royal Navy Volunteer (22 July at 6.30pm). A great place to get tips on good British holiday beers!
Bright green poster style advert for Think While You Drink with times and details about the event similar to those in the post. The bottom reminds us this is collaboration between Good Chemistry Brewing, the Drinking Studies Network and the University of Bristol.

Someone asked me how they could find my writers' retreats. I've recreated my diary of events to help you find me. Many are 'invitation only' but some are more open & some organisers generously offer extra places to others: writingwithpam.wordpress.com/diary/ Or you can book me yourself of course.
