Just in time for #FossilsFriday but here are a few photos from my trip to the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster! I was mainly visiting for their Lepidodendron canopy specimen!!! It's a wonderful museum! #museum #paleontology #paleobotany #dinosaurs
A model of a lepidodendron tree with the fossil of the branch mounted into the wall.A GIANT adorable looking ammonite model with a massive eye and short tentacles.A close up of a Wielandiella model, with the cone and leaves visible. Two sparrows sat in the mouth of a T. rex skull.

I haven't posted anything for a while, so here's some new #paleoart for #FossilFriday: Cetiosaurus in a Middle Jurassic landscape. I've had to compose and execute this in just two days, so hopefully it looks OK! (All data for the plant recons comes from @palaeojules.bsky.social.) #dinosaur #sciart

Hot Take for #FossilFriday - the quest to make paleontology "useful" and "relevant" and "high impact" has backfired spectacularly. A hypothetical "Big Data Approaches to Deep Time Ecosystem Services" almost always end up largely disconnected from actual fossils. (thread) <1/n>

The moon was super bright tonight. So you know what that means... #MoonPics!!! Mounted my camera and got a nice pic of it (best pic I've ever taken of it, at least). The first image had some poat production light balance altering, second is the raw photo, and the other two are the setup. #moonphoto

So, had a great time. Massive thanks to @markwitton.bsky.social for setting it up and for the tour, learnt a lot. Many vistas at Crystal Palace - shaped when the park was built - have a bucolic, Constable-like feel, and I don't think this is a coincidence. Visit, and support this amazing place :)

Ok, time for a thread about what I saw yesterday at #CrystalPalace. As you can see, just about everything has been repaired and re-painted, and in places (like the previously misidentified Xiphodon) re-positioned. It looks fantastic and you have to check it out, even if you've visited before...

Just submitted a review of the Princeton Field Guide to Mesozoic Plants. Short version: a book heavy on plant reconstructions is a great idea (and potential #paleoart reference), but it's let down by formatting issues and problematic plant recons. Thanks to @palaeojules.bsky.social for discussion.

When growth form fossilizes: a new liverwort species from the Cretaceous Las Hoyas site onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/... @davidhorcajada.bsky.social #FossilFriday
Collage of photographs and diagrams of fossil and living liverworts.
Top left: carbonized compression fossil from the Cretaceous Las Hoyas site (MUPA-LH31437). Darker branched fossil on a paler matrix. Scale bar on left is 1 cm. Overlapping this, in the middle of the image is a coloured branched scheme used to measure the fossils, showing different growth modules as different colours.
Top right: annotated photograph of another fossil liverwort: new species Metzgeriites gynothallicus (MUPA-LH 28894). Below that is a photograph of the extant taxon Metzgeria, showing similar features. Scale bars for both of these images are 250 microns.
Bottom right are two photographs of living liverworts with different growth modes: a dendroid form on the left and a 'thalloid mat' growing on a tree branch on the right.
Blue rectangle in bottom left corner is a cover image from the journal Palaeontology.

So you've heard about trilobites, but do you know Naraoids? These trilobite cousins shared similar bodies but differed in details. Most importantly, they lacked hard exoskeleton and had only soft cuticle. That's why they are known only from sites with exceptional preservation, such as Burgess Shale.
