New territory for me… have been wanting to have a play since the mighty Z80 stopped production. Planning a board to work with my existing peripherals

I have been writing z80 assembly and am about to add some C to my build. Easy enough with z88dk. But it’s got me wondering is there something like z88dk for 6502? cc65 looks like a good fit from a quick search. I would like to build/install on MacOS/Linux. Anyone have experience / thoughts?

I've now finished ironing the bugs out of a new version of the hardware SPI controller for my Z80 homebrew. Swapping shift registers and wrestling with SPI modes… frustrating but fun! painfuldiodes.wordpress.com/2026/07/21/b...

I’m not really much of a football fan, and so am quite late to the party for “Ted Lasso”. But what a lovely heartwarming show. Getting older I find I have more time for this kind of thing than gritty realism. It’s a bit like 1980s TV maybe?

“I love the smell of flux in the morning” - assembly time is so much fun. A second version of my 74-series-logic SPI adapter. All good with the flash devices, but still have a timing glitch with the RA8875 display controller to get to the bottom of, but that’s fun too, right?

So, I now have a sort-of-file-system for my homebrew Z80. Saving and loading stuff on flash cartridges. I’m quite excited 😁 painfuldiodes.wordpress.com/2026/06/01/m...

Marvin 1.4 – BDFS
BBC BASIC running on BeanDeck can SAVE and LOAD programs to persistent flash storage. Power off, power on, load the program, run it. BeanDeck now feels like a real standalone personal computer!

Funny… I’ve spent a career in Java/Java-like code. I liked playing with C occasionally, but pointers and memory seemed a bit scary. Recently for fun I’ve been writing Z80 assembly, and I implicitly use pointers literally everywhere, and manually allocating memory. Not so scary now 😂

It’s by no means complete, but I have just shared a Z80 asm library to drive an #Adafruit RA8875 TFT controller. It needs an SPI interface (I have a prototype TTL interface that needs some work, but have also bit-banged SPI), but it may be interesting to some. github.com/PainfulDiode...

I do believe it’s working… SPI board now fully populated, connecting the Adafruit RA8875 TFT controller to my z80 machine. Something odd with the clock divider, and renders really slow - which is all likely software issues - but we have text on the screen!

Storage for BeanDeck: Flash, EEPROM, or SD Card?
The missing piece for my BeanDeck standalone Z80 personal computer is persistent storage – I’m going to need somewhere to store programs and data – to load into my 32KB of RAM.
