New World screwworm has been confirmed in Texas, though there are currently no confirmed cases in Travis County. Pet owners can help protect their animals by regularly checking for cuts and wounds, watching for signs of infestation and contacting a veterinarian if something looks concerning. 🐾

Cases of cyclosporiasis are rising across the country. Previous outbreaks across the U.S. have been linked to fresh produce, including leafy greens, fresh herbs and berries. Thoroughly washing produce can reduce your risk, but it may not completely remove the parasite.

During routine mosquito monitoring, Austin Public Health detected West Nile virus in a mosquito pool in the 78733 ZIP code in western Travis County. 🦟 No human cases have been identified at this time, but the positive mosquito pool indicates that the virus is present in our community.

We just approved an extension of line-of-duty illness leave for Austin Fire Lieutenant Suzanne La Follette as she continues treatment for reproductive cancer. Our firefighters encounter dangerous conditions, toxins, and chemicals every day as they work to keep our city safe.

The Emerald Ash Borer has been found in nearby counties and could already be in Austin. This invasive beetle attacks ash trees and can cause them to decline quickly once infested. Austin has an estimated 1 million ash trees, so early awareness is important.

⚠️ Blue-green algae has been observed near Red Bud Isle on Lady Bird Lake and Walsh Boat Landing on Lake Austin. Algae mats may also be present in other parts of Lady Bird Lake, Lake Austin, and local creeks. Some blue-green algae can produce toxins that may be harmful to people and pets.
