Do you live in Portland? I'm selling my vintage Smith Corona Galaxy Deluxe on Craigslist for $70. BlueSky price: $50. "With jeweled escapement..." To enhance your street cred among the literati, this is the exact make/model that Cameron Crowe name checks in "Almost Famous." DM me.

So here's what @mooninabucket.bsky.social, my writer pal and yours, had to say about my very long story in chapbook form, "Audiophile." I feel seen or, dare I say, heard!
Imagine if Marcel Proust were a music-obsessed girl growing up in the 1970s who found her sense of hearing ebbing away just as she entered adolescence. If he had, you might’ve gotten “Audiophile” instead of “Swann’s Way.”

“So how do you get your music these days?” the book begins. “The internet? The splashy talent shows on the TV screen? The iPod’s dense compressions of the MP3 file? Does the device in your pocket spew a stream of zeroes and ones to the plastic buds crammed in your ears? And does the music transform you?… Or does the music merely fill your day with numbing noise?”

Evan’s beautiful libellum geeks out over the nuances of recorded music to a degree that would please anyone who enjoyed “High Fidelity” or “Almost Famous,” while using the girl’s loss of hearing as a metaphor for the loss of her innocence. Thus, when she rhapsodizes on the superior capabilities of high-end sound equipment from a bygone age, she also conveys the depth of her longing for the intuitive, sensual way she engaged with the world in childhood.

As the protagonist tells us, “Nothing beats the warmth of an LP’s satin groove, amplified through glowing vacuum tubes, released through a loudspeaker’s pulsing paper cone. Sound was liquid, and you swam in it. You drank it up. You danced to music with your eyes closed. You pictured the room where the groove was cut. I mean you could really hear the room.“

On a personal note, Evan shared with me that he himself is experiencing progressive hearing loss. As a music connoisseur, it’s been a difficult adjustment for him. I want to thank Evan for using this experience as the impetus to write “Audiophile,” which is much more than a love letter to music, or a story of one music lover’s loss of access to the greatest pleasure she’s known; it’s also a reminder—for all who may have forgotten, or simply never noticed—of how rich the experience of music listening can be.

“Endling,” by Maria Reva, is a rollicking road trip through war-torn Ukraine. There’s a lot to juggle here, including endangered snails, the bride industry, and the author’s very post-modern intrusions. She pulls it off, though.

Thorn is out of print, but I recently saw it at Manzanita News & Espresso in sunny Manzanita by the Sea. The coffee is worth the trip. The book is too! My first book won the 2013 Chandra Prize at BkMk Press, and later won IPPY gold in the collection category.
