After five days without electricity and 13 days without running water, I can say that I am definitely missing creature comforts. But here are a couple of nice pics from a walk.

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t fully understand how hard it would be. How could I, coming from the US? But I came here with my daughter and dog and we are adjusting. And I know my work has meaning which is worth a lot.

Because I have the opportunity to help people who need and want it. I’m teaching at a school that gives free tuition room and board to the smartest and poorest throughout the country. Kids with 8 siblings living on less than $50 a month who couldn’t afford high school. How can I not help?

Many here don’t depend on electricity, maybe only having one or two lights. They cook outside with charcoal. The water is a problem though. They are using jerrycans filled with the lake water, even to drink. Lake water deemed not safe to even swim in. I have water for drinking but most are too poor.

Living in a small village in Rwanda is harder than I imagined as an American used to ease. I have adjusted to the vast food differences, the lack of running hot water, and the inconvenience of everything. I am not handling hours without electricity (up to 14 a day) or now the lack of water well.
