I asked someone for the source of a claim they were making & they said, “I think it was some threads on Twitter a while ago.” I am now thinking about the effect of any kind of academic work apparently solely on an ephemeral medium that makes it difficult for anyone to find what you said ever again.

I thought R. F. Kuang’s whole thing was dumping all her academic research into her fiction novels, and now I have a bunch of people telling me it’s inaccurate and this is a known issue and common criticism. There are whole other worlds out there because this is news to me!

I know no one means it this way, but I feel like I am being gaslit. I have people telling me that of course YA books are about adults because teens like that sort of thing. Ok but in the VERY RECENT PAST the defining characteristic of a teen book was that the protagonist was a teen. 18 or younger.

On one hand, I want to say YA is refocusing to go back more to teens as the audience as adult readers pull away to romantasy. On the other hand, I've read a weird amount of YA books in the past couple years that involved the main character getting/being married.

Interesting how anytime there is discourse about how time-consuming chores are, people just come in like, "You wash your bedding twice a month? You're doing too much! That's on you! Simply wash your sheets twice a year, you crazy clean freak! Laundry isn't that hard."

I think AI tells are less things like em dashes and more things like inane details that are supposed to be "dramatic." I just saw a post about a toddler running off that claried the yard had no fence and "a driveway straight to the street." Yeah, that's usually where driveways go.

Every YA fantasy books sounds the same. You have to write things like, "My midnight dark cloak was slung over my shoulders, slumped as if I couldn't bear the weight of the silky garment, and my eyes skittered to the rooftops where I'd heard a too-hoarse cough from a ravaged throat."

Going to post this on Substack and see if the authors get mad at me. 😅 I'm sorry, but it's a disappointing roller coaster going from thinking I got a comment on MY writing to realizing I'm just getting an ad. Marketing is tough, but I don't know if this is even an effective tactic for authors.

There's Twitter discourse about how both parents should work because "kids like to have alone time." I feel like I'm going insane. There are SO MANY factors people consider when deciding if one parent should stay at home, and "my middle schooler likes to sit in the house alone" isn't one of them!

Now in the book I am reading, a girl makes a dramatic speech about how she will speak for others bc she was assaulted before and she was believed, so she is sorry the others were not, but she can help. Very inspiring - except her whole storyline was that she was NOT believed when it happened to her.

I was looking up college literature class syllabi for something, and I found one that ended explaining that the reading is not outrageous and the students can definitely do it if they try and they should devote 30-60 min daily to reading and they CAN totally do it all. I guess it’s bleak out there.
