And...the nap did help. My sweet Bird is back. Guess we all have our moments.

Bird's bad mood has continued, in the form of her chasing Other Bird repeatedly out of the cage. I've ordered a larger cage, which should be a right nuisance to put together, so thanks for THAT, Bird. (She's taking a nap now--they both are--so hopefully, her bad mood will wear off.)

Might get round to reading it one day, mostly because the fan art I see of it is always so cool.

That one, I never read. I kind of lost interest in fantasy around age 12 or so, when I discovered horror. Though, from what I've heard of that one, it might have some horror elements!

I DID like it as a kid--a lot--but when I tried to reread it as an adult, it was no longer my jam.

Bird is being weird today. She pecked violently at the air when I changed her food and water, despite her beak being three feet from my hand. I moved my hand beside her so she could peck me if she wanted to, but she STILL only pecked the air. Guess she just wanted me to know she CAN peck.

"The League" was never GOOD, exactly, but it was okay disengage-brain viewing for exactly one season. Then they added this walking diarrhoea joke, this absolute non-character, think his name was Rafi. Enter Rafi; exit audience. Dude was unwatchable.

I'd probably think so too, had I seen it as an adult, or even a slightly older child. But I just wasn't ready for elephant ears on a humanoid creature at four. Or exposed nipples.

My parents named their dog after that book. (And I DID read it, and that's literally all I remember about it. Must not have left too much of an impression.)

Yeah, I've heard that was bad (from a lot of people). Kind of flew under my radar, so I never even tried to read that one.

How old were you? I ask because I absolutely DEVOURED The Hobbit/LOTR as a child, but when I tried again as an adult, the magic was gone. Had no patience for it at all.

I'd have been about five at the time, so my memory may not be entirely accurate, but I'd swear it had a pair of characters called Mrs. Do-as-you-would-be-done-by and Mrs. Be-done-by-as-you-did, and it was EXACTLY the kind of book you'd expect to have characters with those names.

Here's a question: what's the first book you remember giving up on? For me, it was "The Water Babies" by Charles Kingsley. I begged for it in the shop because the illustrations were beautiful, then reading it felt like being scolded by my mother.

Further note on that cyclops: when we moved to Canada, I tried to make sure it didn't come with us by hiding the book under the bed. But when we got there, and my parents set up my bookshelves...there it was. The Children's Classics edition of "The Arabian Nights." Cursed.

Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
René Bull's illustration of a cyclops from "The Arabian Nights." When I was four years old, my Primary 1 teacher rubbed that cyclops in my face when I refused to turn the page to reveal it. Also, Michael Hague's illustration of the Hammerheads from "The Wizard of Oz."
A terrifying illustration of a cyclops about to eat a sailor. It has huge elephant ears, big gnarly teeth, and one bulging eye that looks more like a pustule. If you're reading this alt text because you can't see it, consider yourself lucky.

I get the allure of making up meme languages for animals that can't talk--all that cheezburger stuff; its dog equivalent--but a lot of parrots can actually speak. Animals capable of recognisable speech should be fine with plain English (or whatever language you're meme-ing in).

Oh, Other Bird! He: * dunks himself in his water bowl; * falls in his food; * flaps around everywhere, scattering pellets. Thanks for that, Other Bird. Ought to be fun to clean.

(4AM shower thoughts, trying to get rid of a fever. I know you're not supposed to use cold showers against fevers, but I'm just too uncomfortable. I have to get cool enough to get back to sleep.)

You know who else gets that shit artists get, where people hear you're an artist and ask for free art? Doctors and nurses. Doctors and nurses get that all the time. How must they dread strangers on buses, trying to get them to look at a rash? They don't even get offered "exposure bucks."

I love my birds, but today, they are jerks. Birds, please... Please. Could you, like, not?

Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Also, for the first time ever, they flew away when I changed their food and water. I'm getting bird-snubbed in my hour of need.

I keep reading on the Internet how, when people with birds aren't feeling well, their birds get less shrieky, less pecky, and generally show compassion. Well, I feel horrible, and my birds are double-shrieky, double-pecky; still waiting for that legendary avian consideration!

My birds probably think they are people, and I'm a great vulgar beast infesting their home.

Nerdy gamerpost: I am highly suspicious of these plates of yakitori in Yakuza 5. Whenever you breed one of your racing chickens, you're told the previous generation will be "retired," then along with your new bird, you're presented with a plate of yakitori. Oh, poor Fluffmeister.

Artist! Quote with your most cursed artwork 🖤 I don't know if this is fully cursed, or more "blursed." I mean, yeah, it's nightmare fuel, but isn't it cute? It was a panel I drew on "Drawception," a fun game of Internet telephone.
A digital doodle of a...kind of a ghost, maybe? It has tendrils of fog coming off it, and a big red toothy mouth, and red eyes.

My question for Bird is...why? Why is a tightly-screwed clip so offensive to you? Other Bird doesn't do this. Only Bird.
010
Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Every time I screw these on nice and tight, Bird INSTANTLY descends and unscrews them. (These are the clips I use to attach the birds' toys to their cage, and they have lots of toys. Lots of clips. No matter how tightly I screw them, Bird unscrews them. Her beak is stronger than my fingers.)
Two clips attached to the bars of a bird cage. The bird has unscrewed them.

Whenever I put something new in the cage, Bird tries to a) destroy it; b) failing that, do a weird budgie sex thing with it. (She isn't visibly hormonal. She shouldn't be interested in...that. Unless budgies just enjoy sex at all times.)

Other Bird appears fast asleep, head tucked between his wings...but he's whistling up a storm. This is the loudest he's been so far. I think he's settling in.

You ever read a story called "The Moist House" by Kate Folk? It was in her collection, "Out There," and I suspect she wrote it specifically so she could say "moist" as many times as possible in the space of one short story.

My most hated word is "potty." Especially when adults say they have to "go potty." If I could strike one phrase from the English language, that would be it.

Yeah, like...his window is still open. I'm still going to hear it first thing in the morning, when there's no other noise. Turning it down won't do anything.

There's something STICKY. On my FACE. And I can't take a shower right now because I have a MEETING. F-word.

Before I moved out, I put kefir on his doorknob. I hope it made his hand smell bad. (Not much of a protest, I know. Prior to that, I had reported him MANY times to the landlord, who never did more than ask him to turn it down.)

I had a neighbour in my last building who started each day by playing a Nazi song. There are still days, even eight years later, when THOSE are the songs stuck in my head. Today is one such day, so I'm not going to name the song in my head. What I'm actually listening to is "La Sonnambula."

I think Bird might believe her name is Honey. I was talking to Other Bird, calling him honey, and Bird pushed between us and squawked in my face. Later on, the same thing happened again. Could be coincidence, but I'd better give each bird separate pet names.

Last year, I mentioned that if I got my skates on, I could finish (ghost)writing my 250th novel this year. That wasn't quite accurate: I accidentally counted a bunch of novellas in my total. But I WILL finish my 200th novel this month.

Thanks! You know, if birds really DID have antennae, they might bang into windows less.

Quote with your bird art 🐦 This one is very, very old. I hardly remember drawing it, but I must've done. This was from my phase of always drawing birds with antennae on their heads. #birds
A pen-and-ink drawing of mostly bare branches, with a small bird sitting on the end of one branch. The bird has antennae.

Also...people always laugh at me for this, but I spent one summer when I was really young, obsessed with "Dungeon of the Algebra Dragons," also for C64. I didn't know algebra was maths. I just thought I'd found a fun puzzle game. (Not that there's anything wrong with liking maths.)

"King's Quest 1" was the first game I won by myself, though. I suck at platformers, so I needed a friend's help to finish "Below the Root."

Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 20/09/2026
"Below the Root" for Commodore 64. I LOVED that game. Ran a whole D&D campaign inspired by it. Played it to death despite it being a platformer, which I hate. Some games are so awesome, genre doesn't matter.

...and now, he's nibbling his OWN tail.

He doesn't seem to mind, but she's got to nibble his tail all day like this? Bird, that is not a snack.

Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Yes, should be temporary. Some unfortunate birds are prone to disaster moults.

Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Aw, poor red bird! I didn't know birds could have this condition.
100
Socar Myles @packbawky.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
I saw him three years in a row, having a bad moult each time, which I think is a pretty long life for a wild house sparrow. He wasn't the prettiest, but he did okay!
