pacaya.bsky.social @pacaya.bsky.social · 16/03/2026I disagree with that pretty strongly, both Vineland and IV are mournful/elegiac in a way that OBAA is absolutely not. Changing Zoyd to a revolutionary and then infantilizing him the entire movie just to drive home the point of how ineffectual the French 75 was is also both hamfisted and mean. 011
pacaya.bsky.social @pacaya.bsky.social · 16/03/2026Taking potshots at the new left in 2025 is also a very odd move. Pynchon didn’t and had much more care for his revolutionaries, so it comes off as totally dissonant and kind of mean. Which is fine, OBAA isn’t Vineland and isn’t interested in being Vineland, but it was a weakness for me. 110
pacaya.bsky.social @pacaya.bsky.social · 16/03/2026The French 75 adopts the boneheadedness of the SLA or SDS while very clearly appropriating BPP imagery. It’s a weird conflation that should’ve been handled more deftly, but Anderson drops it after the opening act. 110
pacaya.bsky.social @pacaya.bsky.social · 15/03/2026To your point, I think PTA also completely missed what feelings Pynchon had for the left of the 60’s and 70’s. Vineland is much more a eulogy and I guess respectful of the political project, while Anderson’s much more mean-spirited and thin. 000
