Interesting. I feel like there‘s also misogynist essentialism going that ranks women inferior e.g. In „women like being talked down on“ or something like that. and that hierarchy adds something the astrology doesn‘t have. but i might be wrong

Upshot: sometimes the rational move is to accept uncertainty and just stop inquiring. This paper has been a very long time in the making and it means a lot to me to see it out. Thanks to all the people have been incredibly helpful while I was working on it in @cambridgephilos.bsky.social 4/5

SUN explains cases like an astronomer chasing an unobservable galaxy, or someone endlessly ruminating over whether they're in love. It also unifies two existing norms of inquiry (the Ignorance Norm & Knowledge Norm) as special cases. It also illuminates Fickleness and OCD-overthinking. 3/5

In the paper I argue that there is. Inquiries are subject to a genuinley epistemic limit. Since inquiries are intentional , it is irrational to inquire into a question if you have strong reasons to suggest that you will not succeed in your inquiry. I call this the Success Norm (SUN). 2/5

🎉🎉🎉 Publication alert! My paper "Rational Uncertainty and the Success Norm for Inquiry" is out in Mind — and now *open access*! Am I thinking too much? Is there such a thing as excessive inquiry that's not just impractical, but irrational? 1/5

That assumes that we can only be surprised by what we don‘t know and can never be surprised by what we know. But i‘m not sure surprise and knowledge are connected in that way. Can‘t I find something suprising I already know? Can I not come to know something I‘ve already expected?

Pablo Hubacher Haerle, Uncertain Action - PhilPapers

Also since today is international men's day: if someone isn't aware of one's reasons—e.g., when they are based on misogyny—this doesn't mean that their action was not intentional. Cases like these were an important goal when writing that paper. A recent example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=me1a...

I suggest we should take the latter option and I end by exploring a way in which Anscombe’s other core idea—that the practical syllogism is key for an action’s intentionality—can be reconciled with the phenomenon of uncertain action. 4/5

Pablo Hubacher Haerle @pablohh.bsky.social · 19/11/2025
I argue that actions like these put Anscombean theories in front of a dilemma: 1️⃣ either they have to conclude (implausibly) that these actions are not intentional after all, or 2️⃣ they have to give up the claim that whenever an action is intentional the agent knows their reasons for so acting. 3/5

Pablo Hubacher Haerle @pablohh.bsky.social · 19/11/2025
A paper forthcoming in *Synthese* argues that acting intentionally while being uncertain about one's reason is incompatible with classic views of practical knowledge. Think of a case like: Did I congratulate you because you I truly think you deserved it or because I wanted to look good? 2/5

Interesting. I think one way to go would be to have *much* better behavioural definition. Like having a stab at an actual definition like „attention means orienting PLUS tendency to look towards the object PLUS tendency to behave that involve that object etc.“
