This looks great. As well as the obvious associations it takes me back to Sinclair User's vaguely reactionary solo boardgame, _Kamikaze Bear in Paws V: This time it's grizzly_. Where you use BASIC to style the instructions, this as I recall had a simple program to populate the board.
A home-printed gameboard covered with cards, entitled Kamikaze Bear in Paws V / This time it's grizzly. It depicts from an exaggerated top-down perspective a cratered badlands resemblign a yellow moonscape, and a city of black towers with yellow-lit windows, evoking 80s dystopia. A triangular folded card token represents the player, a bear frothing at the mouth and wearing a bandana with a red sun symbol on it. Spaces on the board are filled with cards. Some are face-down, with the backs reading "grizzly city" or "badlands". Some have been revealed, and have violent and topical (for the 80s) encounters: A skinhead, a hippie, parodies of Terry Wogan and Bonnie Langford. Cards to the side of the board detail the Bear's equipment: Machine guns, "old stoat" liquor, dynamite.

Maelstrom by Alexander Scott, perchance?
Puffin book cover if the book mentioned, it has a gold logo with the s of the word forming a swirl evoking a storm. The painted illustration shows a swashbuckling type facing off with a cavalier, defending a fallen man and a boy sitting on a haycart in the snow. The sky is dark and ominous.

The adventure was #Goblin with a Raygun by @goblinsdontwearshirts.itch.io, from Knock #5 by @themerrymushmen.bsky.social, also at goblinsdontwearshirts.itch.io/goblin-with-... We had a great time with it, and the players found Beebo adorable despite her persistent attempts to disintegrate them.
Illustration of a goblin with earrings and a manic grin, hair in a ponytail/topknot rising vertically from her head, a couple of flies buzzing around her. She holds a raygun in one hand and beckons with the other. She wears a belt with a glowing blue buckle, matching the blue of the spherical forcefield surrounding her.

Below, in large title text: "Goblin with a Ray Gun". The first word is styled in a more fantasy-themed font than the rest of the sentence.

Last week I finally got a game together to try out my updated system! The players were absolutely wonderful, for some of them it was their first game but they were able to jump right in! I planned a one shot but have been asked to continue the story, which is always high praise! #ttrpg #d&d
Five players seated at a table playing an RPG. The DM's screen is visible in the foreground. The table itself is a converted door, with a reinforced glass window and handle still attached. It is densely covered in graffiti. The players are consulting booklets and writing intently on character sheets, rolling dice in the tray formed by the door's window. In the background the walls are covered in flyers for bands and wallpaper made from old model engineering magazines. An old door serving as a table, covered in graffiti including a catgirl and harley quinn, with character sheets, item cards, tokens and pastel dice. The same table. Map of a crashed flying saucer assembled jigsaw-style and printed on thick card. Item cards. Dice, tokens and coins. The table again, a close up this time with some item cards, part of a character sheet, and a booklet with an old picture of a wizard on the cover and the text: "The Red Hack: Fantasy Roleplaying Game" "5: Wizard Spells".

The last one alone is damning. The mere fact that capitalism allowed this absurdity to be built simply to piss away as much energy as possible on tickets for entry to the pyramid scheme should forever disqualify it from pretending it's capable of efficient allocation of resources.

Conservation of soul. Also:
Comic panel showing two tiny characters- a green-cowled hero and boy - standing on a featureless surface, looking up at a purple figure carrying an unidentifiable piece of technology overhead. Voiceover boxes read:

"They'd shrunk to *quark* size, crisscrossing and weaving through spacetime to build a whole *universe* from the ground up. They're everywhere and everywhen simultaneously. We're *made* of them!"

"But it was too much, he told me: the shock of it. They went into some kind of fucking quantum *coma*, right?"

I feel like this series captures something I love about 20th century comics - their ability to take several ridiculous premises and then explore them with absolute sincerity. Doom's story here is a wonderful tale of daring and hubris, no less inspiring and cautionary for being made to sell toys.
Dr Doom and Owen Reece, the Molecule Man, are standing in a bizarre cosmic landscape, a pale blue grid stretches into the distance. The horizon is a jagged pink pattern of lightning like a mountain range. Bolts of energy outlined in pink race along the grid. Flat rings rise from the ground and arc back into it like white rainbows. Pink mounds of sizzling energy litter the ground. Beneath the pair, the grid drops into a deep hole, from which a gigantic yellow and green eye stares, and purple and pink bubbles rise. The Molecule Man looks around in surprise while Doom presents this abstract vista to him:

Dr Doom:

BEHOLD--! THE FOUNDATIONS OF ETERNITY-- THE INTERTWINING OF ENERGIES WHICH IS THE BASIS OF ALL THAT IS!

Molecule Man:

HUH?

Dr Doom:

ALL THINGS, NOW, ARE KNOWN UNTO DOOM... AND THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE HAVE BEEN LAID BARE TO ME!

I GIVE YOU THIS AS A GIFT-- THIS INSIGHT INTO THE INTRICATE SIMPLICITY OF EXISTENCE!

INSIDE YOU IS GREAT POWER! KNOW YOU THIS-- OF ALL THE GREAT AND MIGHTY IN THE UNIVERSE, YOU ARE THE MIGHTIEST-- SAVE FOR DOOM!

I think a lot about hearing that the British music industry was so successful because we could have tons of bands honing their craft on the dole. I mean, we literally produced a band called UB40.

Absolutely deserved block. Voting for the lesser evil only works if it's the last election ever. If there's a 'next time' you will only make things worse. This is how we got Trump and have a real danger of getting Farage.
Diagram of the prisoner's dilemma.

Party A is the left-wing voter with the cooperate option of "vote for B" or to defect "stay home/vote third party."

Party B is the Democratic/Labour candidate, with the cooperate option of "Offers positive platform, respects human rights, rejects bigotry, austerity, and genocide" and the defect option of "Offers ‘Lesser evil’ -platform genocide, erosion of liberties, anti trans, migrant & disabled,
but still technically better than right candidate."

The results are:

A cooperate, B cooperate: Left candidate elected on progressive platform.

A cooperate, B defect: ‘Lesser evil’ elected, supports genocide. Service cuts & erosion of rights for the most vulnerable.AND Right-wing candidate comes back next time with more extreme platform. AND ‘Lesser evil’ moves right to match.

A defect, B cooperate or defect: Right-wing candidate wins, enacts full platform.

A note at the bottom reads:

In a single contest, the right move is to vote for the lesser evil, reducing harm in the short term, because there is no long term.

In a real election it is the worst move possible.

(This assumes enough progressive votes to matter. If they don’t matter, there’s no point in yelling at them for not endorsing the lesser evil.)

👠👠👠
John Blanche's painting _Amazonia Gothique_. A dying sun rises or sets, filling half of a red sky behind the figure of a female chaos warrior. She has an axe and green plate armour, giving way to studded leather on oen leg. Her shield is an indescribable shape looking like a scowling hook-nosed fanged face in profile, inlaid with a profusion of serpents. She has black horns on her shoulders, one bigger than the other. Around her thigh is a white scarf, and at her throat is a cute little polka-dot bow. She has an absolutely insane pair of heels on, one part of her armour, one ornately decorated, I think it has a little mouth with fangs too? The stilettos are like 20 inches tall or something and the toes have hooves. Her hair is a MASSIVE like orb sticking out in all directions in a punk 80s style, it's probably a yard in diameter. It hides half of her face. She wears black or dark green lipstick and a little black heart on her cheek. Writing alt text for this image is like trying to swallow the sea.

On a whim I got some uninked dice I could decorate with crayons. In these days of floating eyeballs, dice made from fossil mammoth bones and so on, there's something nice about the simplicity of just picking a colour and putting it against basic black.
A black d20 on a wooden table. Its digits have been filled in with crayon, like the the dice from vintage D&D sets. The digits are different colours - high numbers are red, medium orange, low yellow. The 20 is hot pink. Nearby rest cyan, pink and yellow crayons.

A long day out yesterday at the Brighton Fringe. The standout show was _Buster_, a play about the life and career of Buster Keaton, told with light and dance and with the framing device of an ominous radio interview. It was captivating, and the audience gave it a standing ovation.
A figure sits pensively in a small wooden chair on a dark stage, facing away from the audience. He is silhouetted by a single bright spotlight, revealing the distinctive shape of Buster Keaton's signature felt pork pie hat. Barely visible figures surround him in the darkness, discernible only by their white faces and shirts, arms folded with chins resting on one hand, as though weighing him up.

The first day of the Brighton Fringe and we're learning about the Eleusinian Mysteries! Alas I was sick and spent the show curled up in the corner, so didn't get veiled and led into the darkness to witness the mystery, but it was a nice playful introduction to an interesting subject.
Photograph of a small theatre stage lit by fuschia lighting that washes out much of the detail. A painted backdrop shows greek columns and a statue of Demeter and Persephone standing back to back. A player depicting Iacchus teases the audience, who stand before the stage. The division between audience and players is unclear, with many in costume, wearing crowns or horns. The Heirophant sits watching them on the edge of the stage, wearing a purple cloak and a crown of leaves.

I would absolutely take these to Bring Out Your Lead, and it wouldn't even be the second most annoying thing I've done there.
Man with bright red hair and vaguely smug expression wearing a garish Ed Hardy jacket, standing in a marquee tent in the summer in front of a large gaming table where more tastefully dressed people are playing a post-apocalyptic game of 40k. One leans over the table to position a tank. Another has turned his head, and while I'm sure he simply saw the camera move and glanced over to see what it was without any ill will in his heart, for comedy reasons we shall assume he's regarding the first figure with disdain.
