I agree! I think they haven't NOT been doomed at least since Edward's final years, but there was a bit of a "too big to fail" situation. They'd have to do something really drastic to sabotage themselves effectively. Which is exactly what they ended up doing, ofc. Ngl I find them so fascinating.
