One way scrolling is different is the constant promise/illusion that each thumb flick will reveal something "new" something that will satisfy, but never does.

So, if the assumptions of bloc voting hold, do the various ceilings of parties correlate with notional floors of their co-bloc-ist parties? A ~40% right bloc, where reform are capped at 20%, and Restore at 8% necessarily implies a 12% floor for the Tories?

It's pundit hyper-labour focus again. Labour are the only party that has a habit of letting its opponents drive its policies and politics to an inordinate amount (due to opposition trauma). And the pundits don't distinguish Labour from the Greens, so they assume the Greens will care what they say.

I am similarly wandering the corridors of my secondary school trying to find what room the lesson I'm late for is happening in.* I'm 44. (*Except for the dreams where a velociraptor chases me around an industrial kitchen)

"But visitors do not lose all privacy rights by stepping through your door: covertly recording a guest in a bedroom or bathroom is very different from a camera on the hallway." You should probably take the hidden cameras out of your bathroom.

So it would be fine to install cameras in a guest bedroom? I'm not so sure.

Saw this retweeted and thought you were talking about a fun, slapstick, 90 minute romp with a lot of good laughs and some emotional moments. Then I checked and saw it was about Coyote vs Acme rather than Resident Evil. I guess it still works.

And it makes it easy to drop your support for whoever when it turns out they are more evil than you thought, or someone even less evil turns up, you don't need to beclown yourself defending them.

People get bent out of shape when I defend voting for the lesser evil, because they don't want to vote for evil. But *lessening* evil *is* good, and this way you never have to try to convince yourself that what you have to choose someone who is unproblematically good.

He means for watching computers play against *each other* in these tournaments, not watching humans play games on computers. There is a big audience for the later and none at all for the former.

The question posed in the title seems to be answered by the caption in the image ... "We will help councils build again" Is a good thing to say, but it's hardly "I have a dream" is it?

Yeah, given the (scare quotes) "themes", I think people often don't want to ascribe that kind of craftsmanship to Lewis, in telling a story for children.

Perhaps the nylons and invitations were his (clumsy) attempts at imagining a 'feminine' version of the things he found to be important at that age.

Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
And Lewis' conversion was in his early thirties? At the very least, he was in Susan's position theologically at that stage in his life. Who knows if the parallel crossed his mind, but it is intriguing.
110
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
What age is Susan in the books? (I confess I don't have a great memory for the details) - Lewis credits his atheist phase as beginning in his mid-teens if I remember correctly.

Please, can we distinguish between the "Pah-Wraith Temple" and the "Curch of the Pah-Wraiths"? The latter were mostly secular, if a little childish, secularists who protested against creeping theocracy in post-ocupation Bajoran government. (I'm sure your paper mentions this)

It feels like there is always something existential for this impulse to latch onto. Synthesising some of the past week's discourse, I wonder what CS Lewis would have written about AI, given the themes in 'That Hideous Strength'' for example.

But it also doesn't flow without the rest of the body. Same with the brain, take it out and we don't function, but it is integrated into the whole. The mental as we experience it is a synthesis of that holistic cognition.
000
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
To be clear, I think consciousness is a property of 'mind' which, as I said, arises it is the whole body, not a property of the brain. The brain is just the primary cognitive organ in vertebrates. Just as the heart is the primary circulatory organ. Take out the heart and blood doesn't flow
100
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
And I prefer to talk of 'brain' vs rest of the body. Talk about it being 'located in the mind' confuses things which should be distinct. The 'mind' arises out of the *whole* body, not just the brain.

Yeah, perhaps my original point came off more antagonistic than I intended. I /do/ think the density of states possible in analogue (biochemical) systems seems to make electronic systems unfeasible? But not /im/possible. But I am aware I may be biased because I am a chemist.
110
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Hmmm, but that is a different issue - we already know that some form of subjectivity can arise from rat neurons. They are called rats. The question is whether neurons can be simulated. If so, then electronic consciousness should be possible (given a metal endoskeleton covered with living tissue)

Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I agree
100
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
This comes to my other big thing, that for consciousness to arise, I believe that any 'substrate' needs to be social, It needs to interact with, and learn from, other subjectivities. I think current 'agentic' LLMs seem to have that interaction, without the subjectivity.
100
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
You mean inputs, and response to stimuli? I agree, I think for something to be what /we/ would recognise as conscious it would need to be discrete, and possibly embodied.
100
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
I fully agree that the logic based route (which is not simply a simulation of non-logic based routes) has not been shown to be possible. And it may even not be possible to 'show' it is possible, given the subjective nature of how we define consciousness.
000
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
First you would have to show that complete accuracy of that kind is necessary for the development of consciousness. The statistical layers of chemistry and biochemistry filter out a lot of that unpredictability.
100
Jeremiah Bullfrog @p-orbital.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Yes - this is what my original point about density of states in an analogue (biochemical) system is - I'm genuinely open to that density being in practice unsimulatable. Scifi has often seem biology as 'inefficient' compared to tech, whereas the reality is so far the other way it looks like magic.
